I had one fan not working and the working fan staying on past shutdown. So I took apart the final stage output today. I did not see any obvious defect other than gunked up a little. So I cleaned it up and that did the trick for me.

I'm on 'hold' on final stage rebuilds until the local store restocks the FET shelf. Then I'll rebuild the original for this car plus two more that have found their way to my spares-to-be-fixed.

Bearings for the fans are really the more immediate priority for me. Don't want to cook another controller due to bearing drag. The 'tired' fan has noticeable axial play available, a sure sign of imminent bearing crash.

My mechanics warned me that the fans are "scraping" indicating worn bearings. Their only solution is to replace both fans; is there some other answer for less than $600?

For about $25 in parts, plus labour, you can rebuild them (the $25 covers a bearing and 4 new motor brushes - for one motor)

Rob--

They are normally stock items at Fry's. Conversion is in the NTE book in the components aisle. Look for NTE2389, priced $4.61 ea per the empty hook at the Burbank store.

Wally, I'll take the ones you offered if you still have them. I'll PM addy and stuff.

Sean--

The beareings can be replaced per the writeup above. Takes a bit of work but nothing insurmountable. Bearings are easy to find, brushes just a bit tougher. Pop-Rivets to reassemble are cheap and easy.

I will pursue this option, thanks for info. I know one or two guys who may be up for the job, or may have already done it with salvaged 928 fans and are selling them.

If it's so easy to rebuild, why is there no market for the rebuilt fans through the usual parts guys?

There may be a market, but there's still an adequate supply of running used fans. As that supply dwindles, there might be more interest in actual rebuilts.

I guess I am back to sqaure one. No passenger side fan again. It worked great for about 5 days. I guess I wlll try to take it apart and clean a little better. This thing is it looks to be in very good condition compared to a some pics I have seen of others. There is some corrosion but it is minimal. I did recheck the fuses already. I guess I also need to recheck the fan itself again by switcing the wires back and forth but I highly doubt that is the problem. Does anyone have a good Final stage module for sale?

928 intl has them. I will (someday...) have a refurb'd one available again for testing. If you are comfy with the soldering and the slight mechanical mods ( drill & tap the heat sinks for the FET's) you can pretty easily fix the one you have.

I suspect mine suffered from the drag from the worn bearings on one side, so getting those bearings swapped will happen before I do the final stages spares on my bench. I'm not close to the car right now so nothing imminent regardless.

I know I have read a thread in the past that delt with the repair of the final stage but can't find the link right now.

Anybody?

soldering in new transistors is pretty simple. Just use care taking the old one apart or the tabs that hold it together will end up wrecked.
