See how it drives & check the condition versus the 47k car and see if the lower mile car is worth the extra 7k-9K.
That car was owned by a Rennlist member and there is known history.

Good history as in records or bad history as in problems?

Thanks,

Exactly!

There's a nice looking 91 S4 on Ebay up to $24k now with 40k miles on it.

Has the torque tube bearings been repl? Pressure plate released, or checked? All rubber replaced? Steering bushings? axle boots, etc? We don't know, but like others have said, you are now in GT price territory. I know I would sell my GT in a heartbeat for $19k, but of course there's some mx that needs doing on my car, so it's not #1 or #2..... There ya go.
The things you describe above as needing replacement except checking the flex plate are for cars with well over 100K miles on them. The car he is posting has less than 50K on it not above 70 like the ones you posted. Find a duplicate low mile one and then we are talking. Plus how do you know the posted mileage is true??? its well known that these cars have their odometers rolled back by shady dealers or not very honest owners, especially when braking the plastic gears driving the odometer are very easy to do.

I said 20 to 22K would be worth it if its in very good shape and running the way it should be. Of course if it needs any kind of work then the price will drop...

The best thing the OP can do is drive as many S4 + cars as he can. Automatics and manuals, two completely different animals. This way he can get a good idea of what he should be looking for. Even if its a $6000 S4 go test drive it, see how it feels.

Until a car meets the reserve fake shill bidding is common place. Dealers will have friends bumping the bids hoping to get a real bidder at a high enough number. They stay below the reserve so no chance they will actually be buying it or have to explain a failed sale and relisting at a later date. Things are not always as it appears and these MIGHT be real bids. Might not so until it sells not a confirmation of values.

90 and 91 S4 cars are usually worth more than the 87-89 models. And 89s are usually higher than the 87 and 88 cars. I guess something to do with the digital instrument cluster and updated dash with airbags. I really like the 90 + steering wheel and dashboard look with the airbags.

Poly up. all it takes is a checkbook. So far, no takers. We've got a feeler at $19k, but most here are telling him it's too high.

Poly up?

I already have a 928, most people here also have one or more. If you happen to not have been paying attention, I'm not the one who started a thread looking for a 928...
If it is truly a 19K car don't be surprised to spend a couple grands first year of ownership.

There was a white / mahagony 5 speed at SITM a couple years ago.
Something like 46,000 miles.
Gorgeous car, had a lot of us drooling.
IIRC it went to north to Michigan, maybe at about 16,500 or so?

For a very well-preserved car, its an awful lot of fun for the money. Value.

Seems to be that even the nice, preserved cars still need the fuel line and engine rubber & sensor refresh, which extends to rack boots, and removal of most of the front suspension to get deep to motor mounts and pan gasket, rear axle boots, etc. Grounds cleaning alone electrical panel refresh, done correctly, requires a lot of disassembly and can run $1000.

A PPI done by a 928 freak is the only way to go. One done by a Porsche mechanic or dealer, not so much.

I really like to get a good deal, but with a 928 you are much better off focusing on getting the car you want in the condition you want. After a few years what you paid won't matter that much anyway, regardless of low miles etc.

Do you want a red/black 87 S4 auto? If so make your offer, negotiate to where you are willing to go, and either buy it or move on, its not that rare.

If there is any fundamental aspect of the car you would prefer different, don't waste your time and money, keep looking.

The only exception to that would be a great deal or being rich enough not to care, so you can buy a nice 928 and learn what you like and don't like about it to apply to your next one.

For me its helps. I think there is a reason a lot of them were sold that way. They look damn good. The car sounds worth money to me but too bad its not a 5 speed.

It's more common, so less unique and therefore typically a lower valuation that something in a more rare colour.

For example, an Iris Blue GTS will get $5K more than an equally appointed Guards Red one due to the rarity.

To the OP, the fact it's an auto, despite low miles, makes it worth far less. As you said, finding a GT or GTS 5 speed, will fetch into the 20-30 range and up.
With 3 years on the TB/WP, plan to either do the work or pay $$ to have someone do this job and any deferred maintenance (fuel lines, oil pan gasket/motor mounts, intake refresh, valve cover gaskets & tensioners, etc etc) as AO indicated.

If you plan in more modifications with alot more horsepower supercharger etc plan on upgrading the clutch,if its an auto usually they can handle it.
Racks usually end up leaking also if not replaced.
