What's this car worth?
Suppose you could buy a '85 automatic with 86k miles without the engine. The paint is original, the bumper needs to be repainted. The interior is mixed bag. Full leather, but the the dash and rear quarter panels are a lost cause. There is a single crack in the pod but the seats front and rear are perfect as is the carpet. Then further suppose you had an engine with the same mileage available from a fellow rennlister. If you put it together repaired or replaced the rear quarter panels and dash and got it back in running form how much would you pay for it?

I am only interested in the car - not the engine.

AS OFTEN POSTED...it is $10,000 away from being a $5,000 car. You do something like this as a hobby because it is "fun" like building a model car from a box. It is the process you enjoy not so much the result. For many an old tired 928 is more of a liability than an asset !
The risks of buying a none running, none drivable car far exceeds the potential benefits. Comes down to (in your best dirty Harry voice )"do you feel lucky punk"

The guy want $3k for the whole thing, which is too much. $2500 for a home brew rebuild that isn't complete motor and tranny (AT or 5 spd?) is also too much, and so is $1000 for car minus both engine and transmission.
If its a 5 spd whole thing is worth maybe $2500, but $2k would not be a low ball offer.
If its an AT whole thing is worth maybe $1500, and I would have a lot of questions on why the tranny is out.

I know we like to be hard on folks that don't know what they have, but the seller is a good person. I have met him. Recognizes he is over his head and is selling it to help out his brother's family who in need. The tranny is still in the car.

My impression is $7-10k for an '85 auto is on the high side unless everything has been gone through by someone you trust. A run of the mill '85 auto probably is hard to get more than $5k for as a seller and as others have said it would still likely require $10k to be a $7-10k car.

Here's another that sold for $3K:

I would think that these would be good examples of the floor price for drivable examples sold by motivated sellers.

considering that I bought a decent 85 5 speed for $2,500 about 18 months ago and an 86.5 5 years ago for $4,000 I do not see big money for these cars at this time. Sure it may change but it also may NOT.

Does he have the rest of the bits for that engine, like the intake accessories etc? If so I would offer 2K for the works, pull the heads and oil pan and check and make sure things are OK, put them back on with new gaskets and finish putting the engine together. It looks to have decent cam gears and a new water pump and cams don't look all pitted. If you get it for 2K and can do your own work, you could possibly get that engine running and in the car with a total 3K invested. You would have the intake refreshed, new timing belt, water pump, gaskets and engine mounts. Not a bad start. Tranny would be a roll of the dice but that is a chance you would have to be willing to take. They are pretty stout units though.
