Default Help...?? 80 928 Torque Tube Question

I just bought an 80 928 4.5 auto...

Long story short... starter fell out... HAH! Anyway, took these pics in disassembly/repair today...

Inspection Cover...

Inside front bellhousing/flywheel. See all the shiny pock marks, and the bearing near the clamp??? Did that bearing come out of the torque tube?

Here's the goodies that were jammed into the flywheel and bouncing around inside... Which I imagine are what caused the starter/inspection cover to become separated from themselves.

Just outta curiousity.... What is this??? It's on the passenger floorboard near the fuseblock...

Thanks!

The last picture is the bomb controller. When it reaches a certain number the car blows up. But then again it looks like the car has already blew up so I would not worry about the future.

There appears to be a power button and pilot light. The counter is often used to read a number set into the control. The other two buttons who knows. For sure it not porsche related.

It appears the torque tube failed and the bearing crashed into the starter causing the lower bellhousing to crack. There is a lot of torque on the bell housing when the engine is running and anything interfering can result in what you see.

I do have the parts you need. I have a good torque tube and lower bell housing. I have never seen a three speed torque tube fail, but I suppose anything can happen. If it is the bearing you see then the bearing holder is toast too. You could rebuild the torque tube for under $40 but without the bearing holder you will have to find a new one. I think Jaeger Engineering has a solution for the bearing holder.

I cannot tell if the the starter is damaged. Of course there are other things that you do at the same time like the torque converter bearings and from trans seal. You should be able to remove the torque tube without removing the transmission. Saves a lot of time.

Here is a link to rebuilding the torque tube.

Good luck

Yeah starter is trashed... doesn't even actuate when given 12 vdc... so my shot is tt caused the starter problem, which subsequently caused the alternator, then the ps pump bracket.

Default Damn...

Didn't wanna rebuild a torque tube... That's what I thought... That puts me out till at least friday gettin her running! Too much work to wrench on her today, tomorrow or thursday.

Oh well... Anyway, the starter, n alternator tested bad... so whilst I'm at it, I'll throw a timing belt in it...

Guess it's gonna become a 5 speed as well!

I have a complete conversion from an 84 if you go that way. Here is the link for the conversion.

The most important thing is to get the clutch master bracket positioned correctly.
