How to assemble rear suspension and gearbox back into the car
Now I have all components of the rear suspension, drive axles, TT and braking all up to scratch as components but must plan the reassembly ino the car. Perhaps this can be done like the factory did, all assembled and then in one go, or it can be done piece by piece, suspending the gearbox and TT first, adding the subframe net, adding the suspension components and finally the driveshafts and shock absorbers. The first option sounds nice but may be too heavy to handle. How do you guys do this? Engine is out of the car.

TT was installed first supported with a jackstand, and re-installed my gearbox with the crossmember attached using a floorjack under the crossmember, and another jackstand under the front of the tranny. Then lifting both as I went, then loose fitted all the hardware into the TT/trans, and then crossmember, made sure all was aligned well, and tightened everything up. It's not too difficult just time consuming, especially by yourself.

Yes, I like that. But I thought to have the TT already attached to the tranny and crossmember. Rolling that under the car and lifting it bith ends. Attach o bodywork and than fixing the rest.

It worked pretty well for me... First time on a 928... I believe it took a little over an hour... Re-assembling the suspension took longer... but that's to be expected.
I just put a new tranny into a 00 range rover... That was easy... lightweight, put it on my chest n hefted er up! Same cannot be said for the 928 tranny! It's a hairball heavier!

If possible always remove and install TT and gearbox together. Center shaft and gearbox input need to align dead straight when TT and box are bolted together. If not, its possible to destroy gearbox input shaft. I have used steel cable covered in plastic or something similar hanging from rear swaybar many times to keep gearbox up while rear subframe goes it to support it.

Ideally you would stand the trans pointing upward so that the TT can be centered while tigthening the TT to Trans bolts. Since that's probably not going to happen, you could have the TT and trans resting near their respective centers of gravity so that the centers have no forces.
The front TT to bellhousing has dowels but the rear has nothing at all to align the centers so this is really important.
I also tie up the trans and drop the crossmember assy. In theory, you could do the same thing with an extra floor jack holding up the TT but it will certainly wind up being right where the other floor jack needs to be!
