Default Volvo Mounts in (Replaced Ford Mounts)

While I was replacing the rubber steering coupler I thought I might as well refresh the mounts, I replaced the original Porsche mounts way back in 2001 (how time flies) with the heavy duty Ford ones (NAPA part No. 602 1686) and have never been that impressed with their vibration isolation properties.

Below is the comparison between Ford and OEM in 2001 which was well past its sell by date.

Getting the mounts out was not too bad, the horizontal bolts that go to the bracket on the upper a-arm is still the worst part. Well the Ford mounts held up much better than the OEM but then they are solid blocks of rubber.

The volvo mounts are tall as others have noted, so I ground 1/8" off the hook before I re-assembled. Got most of it back in and decided I was done for the day, will post an update once I road test and see if I can notice a difference.

Cheers

Chris

Great job Chris. I was just thinking about you and your car today as I saw a beautiful Arena Red 993 on the interstate today. How goes it with your car. I visited your 928s4.com website to see how things were going relative to your trans out status from a year ago and discovered the hosting environment no longer allows guestbook entries.

As you know I'd love to be first in line if and should you ever decide to sell your car. The efforts and care you have put into it is astonishing.

You've done a lot of beautiful work on that car.

I know b/c I searched around some in the threads you've started to see if you did a write-up on the rubber steering coupler ("rag joint" down to the NAPA store ;-) but didn't find one. Am I missing it?

I have recently installed the Volvo mounts. I will go the Porsche ones for sure next time. In fact I am looking forward to sooner than later. There is a reason that the reputable shops will only install OEM mounts,

I am still waiting on something to complete the coupler, actually the old one was in better shape than I thought but while it is out good opportunity to replace.

Well the thought had crossed my mind with all those grimy parts on the garage floor and if it was Winter no doubt there would be some beautification going on but this is driving weather!

Thomas,
Please share your concerns as this is the first I have heard of your issue.
It is important for me and the community.

I have installed these on 2 cars, the only differences I noticed was that the top and bottom threaded studs were of a smaller diameter compared to the OEM and the ford mounts, they were also a lot more easier to install compared to the ford mounts, they felt easier to flex into position for mounting compared to the ford ones, those solid ford mounts are super hard.
The engine felt good with the Volvo mounts after installing, couldn't tell the difference compared to Ford mounts.

We have a bunch of guys on Germany who either use Anchor 2698 (me too) or the Volvo mounts. Both of them up to now with no issues. I installed around 10 sets of Volvo mounts in various 928's myself all with no issues and vibrations are no issue.

Perhaps Roger can share with us how many sets of these mounts you have supplied and/or how many have given negative feedback. I have run with solid rubber mounts on my current 928 for 5 years and I reckon it runs jst as smooth as the hydraulic mounts that regularly fail in our very hot climate.

My current rubber mounts are sitting a bit on the low side but maybe they were at that point to start with. I am viewing your supplied mounts as a fall back in case I need to replace but I have no symptoms that tell me it is time to replace.

Am a little concerned that the EIS system may foul if I choose to fit the new mounts next week- has anyone experienced a problem or is it more of a concern rather than a hard "it is likelyu to happen" type problem.

Regards

Fred

Me too, Volvo units installed pretty smoothly on the Euro car in 2011 and doing well.
They replaced a replacement set of Porsche mounts with about 35K miles (according to documentation).
The car used to have headers that were very close to the Porsche mounts and that may explain their early demise.

One other 928s I've had 3 sets out of 4 sets of the Anchor mounts fail completely as expected.
Only still-good set was bought pre-concern, back in 2007.

This thread went a little sideways, I would be interested in Thomas's experience but just like when there was an option to use the Ford mounts over 11 years ago there is a choice to be made and personally I like the ability to try something different.

Sounds like there an awful lot of Volvo mounts installed, time will tell how well they hold out but the Porsche mounts are not exactly super durable but they are super expensive.

Right now I am glad I have them back on the car, reminds me it is about time to pony up for that lift cos this body is not getting any younger .....

Chris
