Two Questions...with pics!
Hi All
So i have 2 questions that will be easy answers for you guys.
First pic...
Can someone identify the disc/calipers in the pic as original to my 82 or have they been changed?
The reason i ask is the wires (for the brake pad sensors??? have been disconnected/cut), so i'm wondering if that is because if new units were installed it created a problem OR the sensors are just a PITA.
Second pic...
Alternator cooling hose seems to be going nowhere into the exterior of the engine bay..pretty sure that aint right...where should this go?
Cheers,and thanks!!!
Adrian

1st picture shows "S" calipers and slotted rotors that were part of the "Competition" group in '81 and '82. The sensors were probably worn through and not replaced. When the insulation on the sensor wire is worn through, the bare wire contacts the rotor and "shorts out" completing a circuit which turns on the warning light.
One end of the alternator cooling hose connects to the black plastic housing on the rear of the alternator and the other end forms a loop in the passenger side wheel well and is attached to the inside (front side) of the plastic splash shield in front of the passenger side front tire.

Thank you James
hmmm...back to my option group M13 query ($2975.00 on the original sticker)that i have long suspected was the competition package, but no one has been able to confirm.I suppose the first owner could have added this later on...but i have what i think is a complete service history from the original owner who had the car for almost 20 years and there is no invoice for upgrading the brakes. So maybe i do have an unofficial "s" after all...(keeps me awake at nights wondering about this lol)
So i should be able to R&R the brake pad sensor wiring without issue then if these are originals i assume.
James..passenger side wheel well? This is drivers side surely?
cheers.

Brake sensors are just a loop on wire in the plastic block and when it wears enough to break the wire (no circuit) that lack of a signal throws the warning which is why simply cutting and hooking the wires together turns off the warning. Has nothing to do with "grounding" to the rotor.

Adrian:
You're right. Driver's side (duh).
The window sticker from my '82 lists the option as "Competition Group" with a MSRP of $1,900.00.
As near as I can determine the "Competition Group" included everything from the Euro "S" except for the 4.7 engine (some, apparently, had sport seats, but mine does not). The "S" wasn't available in NA until '83.

No one mentioned that the alternator cooling hose also contains the outside temp sensor. There is a double metal hoop that connects the hose to the plastic shield.
Better to lose the part of the hose going to the alternator and replace the alternator with a Delco.

The hose under the wheel arch should do like in this pic:-

The two large hose clips at the left end are clamping the hose onto a short tube that holds the external temp sensor. The loop up and over is to prevent debris and water getting sucked into the alternator. The bracket is my version of how it should be mounted, not stock .
