Default Hatch release question 2

I checked the fuse and it was blown. I replaced it and now the hatch release motor (HRM) is cycling as it should. However, now the lid doesn't pop open. I hear a releasing sound during the HRM cycle, but the rear lid doesn't move. I'm thinking I may have two problems here - bad rear hatch / hatch release alignment and the HRM height positioned incorrectly. I would like to eliminate one, so I can focus on diagnosing the problem with the other. The WSM is very vague on the manner of adjusting the HRM. It says to adjust the HRM height from inside the car with the lid down and IIRC, to wait until resistance is felt. I can move the HRM full travel in both directions and not feel any difference. Are there any alternative methods of setting the HRM position correctly (besides trial and error)? As always, thanks.

Adjust the hatch release down, run it. When it starts to load up, get it adjusted so that it just starts to load up at one point in the cycle. That is as much as you will get.

The piece on the hatch can crack and get out of alignment. You can add shims under one edge to get the alignment better - do NOT try to bend or force the part - it WILL break ($$$).

Some folks have had to add shims to the metal tongue or flap that actually pushes on the plastic latch part. They just stuck u-shaped pieces onto the tongue to get a little more travel.

Go here http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm for a lot of good tips. The hatch tips are in the "Exterior" section.

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but Nicole sells a replacement for the "receiver liner" the white plastic surround in the body of the hatch. Hookedoncars.com

If your hatch liner is in good shape, the hatch receiver does not have any cracks on it and you can't get the hatch to release by adjusting the assembly down, you should try adding zip ties to the lower latch. That worked for my car.

Wear on the part the releases the latch in the receiver can do this. I have also seen the bush in the arm from the motor, where its connected to the release lever, breakup and produce enough slack for it not to open. I have fixed a couple of these with a metal bush....but it needs a bit of work - drilling , tapping, small screws, washers - 10 mins with the right stuff.

+1. Did the adjustment every whichaway and needed the zip ties. It's a design flaw. Just put the zip ties in and never worry about it again.

Hey... 10,000 parts and only one was screwy... gotta' love that German engineering
