In the words of JB - "looks like you are $10,000 away from having a $5,000 car."

Good luck, sir.

Another saying you are sure to know well soon enough - "There is no such thing as a cheap 928."

Congrats. Good find and a good price. My advice, don't start modding it. Just take care of any defered maintenance and drive it. The more you drive it the less electrical and fuel system problems you'll have. If you don't mind putting 944-951-968 style seats in it I know where you can get some newly recovered ones for $500 - $700 localy. If you want an inexpensive mechanic who specializes in 928's just let me know.

Anyone know where I can get a used set? I have to stay kinda cheap for the grassroots budget...
I don't know the grassroots rules, but the lemon racers need a net $500 car, sell seats and other non track parts to lower net cost, but safety equipment doesn't count and that runs a good $5k without labor. There is no such thing as a budget track Porsche.

Find a set of US 85/86 exhaust manifolds, they are $200 a pair or less used and work about as well as anything when used with a proper Y or X and high flow exhaust.

Well, I was going to start another thread, but might as well post here. I am looking for another set of seats. preferably something that sits lower than the 928 seats (no height adjustment - it feels like i'm sitting on a bit pile of pillows). I'm a taller guy and I'm not sure I will have much headroom with a helmet on.

As far as a mechanic, I'll be alright. This is about the 5th or 6th car I have restored so I'll just take it slow and learn the car/systems. If I have any questions I think this forum can help me

I have a lemons car and that is not what I want to do with this car. It's too good for that!!! this car is going to be a complete full interior weekend cruiser. the challenge I am speaking of is where you build a car for less than $2012 (Including the purchase price) and race it in a drag race, autocross, and concurs against cars also built for the same $$$ value. At this point I just want to do some general maintenance and clean up the interior a bit (as much as I can with $600). I just think it would be hilarious to show up and compete in those three events in a sub $2012 Porsche 928. The car will also get published for competing. After that I will do the more expensive repairs like paint and replacing interior parts.

I wanted a cheap set of headers because I can weld and fabricate the rest of the exhaust. Figure it will give the car a little oomph.

Nice pickup NordicSaab! Your door panels look good. The dash ain't too bad either but those seats....!

I reckon you'll have fun with this shark. Good luck!

Remember, if you want to keep your spending under control try to avoid taking it to a mechanic, even a "specialist". If you're handy, all the answers you seek will be here......somewhere! I see that you've restored cars before...this is a plus 'cause you will understand the need for patience. The beast will sit motionless for weeks or maybe months on end whilst you sort stuff out.

I'm nine years and counting on my 928S. Once you get it sorted, it will give you much pleasure.

Now what? Crack the champagne you lucky basstad, and ignore the naysayers. You may have put 1400 down on a 10K loan but you're going to have a hell of a lot of fun. More than 1400 would buy you in most places....

Nice score! Hope to see you at the GRM Challenge - I've entered twice - once with a DOA mgb gt and with a bmw e28. The mg is getting a second chance this year.

You can get some headers off a 85-86 US engine and get rid of the current boat anchors. They bolt right up but will need a little modification connecting to the cat.

What kind of glue are you using on the interior? If it's contact cement, make sure it's something that's high temp rated. Regular Weldwood will melt on a hot day. Better choices are Weldwood HHR or Pliobond. ACE (at least the ones near me) carry Pliobond. Weldwood HHR you usually need to get from an upholstery shop in quart (or larger) sizes.

I've had success with Loctite Spray Adhesive Professional Performance 300 Heavy (purchased at Lowes). I says its water and heat resistant, and is for wood, metal, acrylic, carpet, laminate, polypropylene and pvc.
