Default 928 asymmetry

Ok, today is the 4th different 928 I have observed this on...

When you put wheels that are a very close fit on a 928... say an 8" ET50 front wheel you can CLEARLY see that the drivers side wheel fits MUCH better than the passenger side wheel. The passenger side wheel clearly extends to the very edge or beyond the fender lip while the drivers side is close but still inside the edge of that fender.

My question is what the hell is that about??? I have seen it on my race car (with S4 suspension), my S4, a friends S4 and now BOTH my '92 and '94 GTS...

Can others confirm and offer thoughts on what might be going on here... If the passenger side was the same as the drivers side the 8" ET50 front wheels would really be fine... as it stands...not really a great fit.

Oh, here is the real kicker... the S suspensions (like on EURO85) DO NOT show this same issue! My 8" ET50's on EURO85 fit the same on both sides! Most if not all these cars were never wrecked either so that is not the issue.

Same on my 79 and the 80 I had for a little while last summer. My mechanic said it's common and he has no explanation but he's observed it on other Porsche models besides the 928.

The first time I really saw it was on my race car... I actually could not even run some of the tires I bought because they rubbed on the passenger side (but were fine on the drivers side)...I just chalked it up to variance on the custom made fenders for the car and didn't worry about it.

Then I got my FM10's from a friend with a 930 (that's what he ran them on) and didn't really notice a problem...never really paid attention to it. Then I sent the wheels out to Chris in CA and he put them on his S4 and I thought.... "they seem to stick out more..." Then my buddy down the street bought the car and I saw it in person and was like..."damn that passenger side sticks out quite a bit more than the drivers side." Then I put these CLW's on my '92 and same thing...stick out more on passenger side.

You don't notice it when the wheels are tucked up in the wheel wells, but as soon as you start pushing them out it shows up really quickly that one side is not like the other...

What's weird is my passenger wheel did the same thing. Stuck out 1/2" and it was driving me crazy. Turns out one of the PO's had shimmed out the upper A arm with 2 big washers per side. Never figured out why he did that. Just took them out and both wheels fit perfectly.

IIRC the maintenance manual says all body deminsions are + or - 10mm.

i have exactly the same thing here.
The service history that came with my car hints at some sort of insurance claim, i thought this asymmetry was a result of this...but perhaps not, seems odd to me that the car could possibly have come from Porsche like that, but makes me feel a whole lot better if its really the case.

Cheers,

Adrian

James, you should watch a video of the Porsche builders making 356 panels "fit". Blocks of wood and deadblow hammers. +- 10mm on those cars isn't even close. Why you're seeing a pattern with stamped 928 panels I have no idea..

When I had my 82/gts with a body kit one tire rubbed when hitting a bump or if the kids were in the back. I always thought it was the poor quality of the kit. Only one tire had this issue now it seems like this is normal. During my research I found you could shift the rear left or right about 1/4 inch if I remember correctly.

... and I thought Germans were all about symmetry ;-)

My '79 is afflicted by the same +/- 10 mm phenomenon. I didn't realize it was this common, I thought I had a special build - Monday after Oktoberfest celebration weekend.

I only noticed it when I added 21mm spacers to the 8" wide ET53.2 phone dials last year. Scratched my scalp for a while after - WTF happened here ? I can relax now, I guess, I am not ALONE and I don't have a unique specimen on my hands !!!
