Ok then its shot. It pushes all the way down with just slight pressure.

Damn, if I could've gotten a replacement today, I could still have got it back together for SITM.

If its drained of oil once, it will easily compress.

It certainly feels like there is no hydraulic resistance now. If it got drained would it fill back up when the engine runs or could it get an air lock???

Right, once it is taken off and drained it compresses easily.

Well its still in the engine right now and compresses easily. Does it pump up with engine oil pressure? Is there some kind of check valve that would retain oil when the engine isnt running?

Yes it pumps up with engine oil pressure.

If he removes, pulls the piston out and cleans it all really well that may fix it as there is a possibility of a piece of crud preventing oil pressure from reaching it.

make sure the oil feed line to the tensioner is snug and is on the right way (only one way it goes on there). Mine snapped just before I was to head to the 04 OCIC...low oil pressure and noisy... Got a new line on there and everything was fine after that. (I put the line on backwards after I rebuilt that head...didn't know it only fit one way)..but got lucky with no damage.... I did make the trip to the OCIC..but as a passenger

Not very common, on a "late" 32 valve engines. Happened on very early 1985 engines....but I'm not sure I've ever seen a bad "late" model tenioner.

Turning the engine over by hand (no oil pressure), will make the tensioner collapse. It's a pretty darn simple thing. Take it apart. There's a check ball on a seat that retains the oil in the hydraulic part of the tensioner. If there is a giant piece of dirt there, clean and re-install. If there is not a giant piece of dirt there, fill it with oil and see if it still has the problem.

Your problem is probably simple and actually very common to 928s. When they are started multiple times, and run for only very short periods of time, or short distances, the hydraulic lifters will "suck up" some air and clatter like crazy.

Happens here, every week of my life.

All you probably needed to do is to run the engine and be patient.

Try bleeding the clutch.....

Hmmm....this sounds exaclty like a local S4 that came into my friends shop a month ago.

The rear plug came lose allowing the head to lose oil pressure and the chain tensioner was not keeping pressure (causing the rattle). Replaced the plug....problem solved. Sorry....I'm probably not calling the "rear plug" by the proper term, I'm a 16V guy....

Just in case the tensioner really is buggered I have managed to get a replacement (complete with new pads) from a very helpful local Rennlister. I am going to replace it with this one.

I had thought about there being an oil feed issue with the one in there. Bears checking on. I replaced the rubber oil plugs with the metal pins last year. Good news is the cams look in good shape.

There is still hope for us taking Sharky to the mountains after all.

I'll post an update when its all back together. Thanks for the interest and advice everyone

Button it up and give it a good run if you still hear clacking noises.

see Greg's post above.

Get on the road to SITM - even if it's a day later than planned!

Murray,

SWEET, we are all pulling for "Sharky" to be OK and to come to SITM!

See you guys soon,...hopefully in a Shark, but a Hyundai is OK too! Jeannie and I don't care if you and the boys have to take a bus to get here, as long as you guys get here to be part of the SITM FUN!!

Also if you do get here and find you need more, I have a nice clean complete 60K mile 90S4 engine sitting around that you can cannibalize anything you may need...well except for that one "damaged" piston/cylinder...grrrrr.

Cheers,

Dave
