Cause of My Minor Fire
After reading one of the posts here this morning and knowing where to look, I found this small fuel line back by the bellhousing. Thank you for the info, it literally could be a life saver:

Yup! Just looked at the lines on the 928 that arrived this morning. Top priority as soon as fluids are all changed.
Contact 1 of the big 3 and get new hoses or get racing lines put in.

I would convert to -AN fittings, they should last almost the life of the car if they're used properly, and they look nice too, could go with Greg's hoses though, they're REALLY durable!

Cut the hose in half and you will see the hard plastic tube that is the actual fuel line. That cracked rubber is only a coating/shiled. Looks liehe the bottom of that line was sitting and rubbing on something.

There won't be much left inside.

THat particular hose is unique to the 87 S4 - it was replaced in 88 and onwards with a hard line.
The routing of that hose on an '87 is a little suspect - it can be pinched when the fuel pressure dampener is clamped down, and the two I've replaced were both pretty misshapen.
If I have to do it again on an early S4, I'll probably just upgrade to the 88+ arrangement with a hard line that screws onto the pressure dampener. It means new fittings from the fuel cooler to the dampener, and a new dampener (which has the M14 screw thread rather than a barb), but its just so much more secure.
