Howbout this... I'll cook my second brain and-once I've made sure it works-trade the slightly-runny-component-side brain that works perfectly that I'm currently using for an inop brain, first-come-first-serve... ??? Send me a PM.

Hi Don, yes, a more "controlled" experiment that you suggest will be very interesting .... please let us know what you find.

Well, I am going to give this a try soon. I want to pull the console anyway to do the heat/ac control and vacuume systems.

Thanks for the tips,

Why not just reflow the joints with a soldering iron and some rosin core solder?

Denny,

I tried that and maybe it's just me, but it nearly drove me crazy trying to keep track of which ones I had done. There are 100's and it's a very tedious job. I gave up after about 30 minutes. If you have the patience, it maybe a better solution but its definitely a lot more work.

It will take forever and won't be as good as re flowing it. Originally it was floated on a pool of molten solder.

Well I have to report back that my brain cook repair didn't last very long. It will sometimes engage and hold at 40-45 mph, but not at highway speeds where I need it. Initially it did work at highway speeds. I might try cooking it again since there was some initial improvement, but of course if components are being damaged by the heat, a second cook isn't going to help. I'll probably send my 2nd brain in for professional rebuild instead of cooking it.

Right! And that's the result most will have, i.e. a marginal repair with
'cold' solder joints that fail like the original case especially for the larger
components that need direct heat penetration to flow the solder to the
component. Non-functioning CCs are also the result of component failures

Maybe, call 928 Int'l for a rebuilt CC.

I did the reflow on the fan output module and solved the gremlins. Beware of the toxic fumes...it can be nasty for your health...
