The factory amp, or amp included in a headunit willl be sufficient for these drivers. The Vifa are not rated for more than 10w and the Wavecor have no official rating yet, but with the cooling and voicecoil size, I bet they could take up to 50w, but dont need nearly that much.
These are known to fit in the doors of OB cars. I sent a set down to Roger to test rear position.
Thanks
Hans

I just recieved an update that the drivers are in customs now, and should be on the way to me before the end of next week. OB replacement speakers should start shipping the week of 3/11.
I will try and firm up pricing over the weekend, and open for pre-orders.
Thanks

Speakers drivers came in today. Hope to start assembling these soon. I will post pictures of the finished product when I get a couple sets put together.

Looking at the sheet metal in the doors of my ex-Europe '87 (it has the 4-speaker setup with perforated door panels - i.e. no audio options), it looks like there's space to offset the mid driver slightly and possibly fit a tweeter there too.
e.g. something shallow like:

or
http://www.madisound.com/store/manuals/nt1-204-8d.pdf
Of course, the challenge as always is to get adapter plates to mount the buggers. I'm beginning to think I need a 3d printer.. I keep finding stuff where it would be useful.
Hans, you've probably measured more doors than me; I've only had S4's so not sure whether the early cars are the same. Is there space on the early doors (assuming they're different) to fit a tweeter too? Or is it not worth the hassle? I'm trying to come up with ways to make it sound decent without ruining the nice "hidden factory speaker" look..
Your effort is the only promising one I've seen to-date, so I'm still driving around with the fader set to rear, as there's no foam on the stock front ones LOL
edit: somewhere here I've got measurements at various positions between the sheet metal speaker impression and the door card - I used the kids' play-dough to measure depth by squishing it with the door card.

Hilton,
I have everything here to build the OB replacement speakers. Just need some customers to get me motivated to assemble them.
The problem with doing a 2-way separate system with the OB is I could not get things lined up so it would both fit and be centered under the perforation. I do have drawings here, and worked on this with several volunteers, but in the end I just went with a high-quality full-range replacement.
As a side benefit, the OB speakers are much more cost effective than my 2-way 84+ kits. Shoot me a PM if you want a set, it would motivate me to get a couple pairs assembled and photographed.

I will post some pics before. I will need to get DR's permission before I bring any product to show now that I could be considered a vendor. I will certainly be there.

Been a while since I updated this thread. The Wavecor drivers are in, as are the CNC cut mounting plate.
Attached are a couple pictures of a assembled sets. I would like to get one or two more pairs installed before officially making them available for sale, but the are are here and ready if anyone would like a set.
They are a direct replacement for the OB speaker, using the best available full-range driver that will fit without modification.
Thanks
Hans

Retail on the Wavecor versions will be around $150, but would let the next couple sets go for less to get more test units out there.
I will have a budget option using Vifa drivers later on when I get caught up with other projects.
Thanks
