Default drive to SITM with a leaky rack?

Well I had planned on doing the rack before the 11 hour drive to SITM. But with our family trip to Disney next week and only a few days to spare once I'm back I don't think I can get the rack done in time.

She leaks from the rack above where the fluid lines attach. My hoses seem good. And she really only drips when I'm parking or dry turning and a bit after I park.

I had also planned to do the mm and opg in time but that ship has sailed as well.

Safe or not safe, what is the general concensus?

The last thing I want is fire. FYI not cats on my car. And when I got the car last year the ps fluid was low, so this thing has been leaking a while.

Should I even bother with some stop leak in it?

What? You gotta month!
Every year, everyone that is going to SITM busts there *** to get their car ready for it. You have time, get under there!!!!

I left my driver seat in JIK I decide to make the drive.

Clean any leaked fluids really, really well and make the drive. Knowing the crowd they may even attempt to fix the leak while you are there if you ask nice.

Power steering fluid is flamable and if you leave it laying/dripping around in hot areas you could end up with a fire.

I know, this would have all been done if had not smacked it up. I get her back tomorrow.

I should also note that my front brake rotors are worn to the point that the slots have almost vanished, pads are still good.

I think of all the things, the rack is my major concern for the long drive, second would be the front brakes.

Maybe I should just do the high pressure line as well to be safe?

Change the rack, or take the belt off and drive it that way.

I'm almost embarrassed to say I drove mine empty for ages (with the belt on), finally replaced a leaky hose, filled it up and it worked fine.

(Never follow my advice)

Let me understand fully.

You rear-ended someone and claimed your car accelerated at the same time you braked?

Your car was in the shop, and now you want to take a long drive and admitting your brakes were bad.??? PATHETIC...you have been misleading in your story..

My brakes are due for replacement yes, but not bad. They still operate flawlessly. Kudos to Porsche design.

In fact they were working so well that I never even thought to look at them closer until I measured the rotor thickness when I saw the car on the hoist with the wheels off and noticed that the slots were diminished. And now I'm acting on my findings by making repairs. Your assumptions are pathetic.

Just sayin.

..I got hollered at for not buying the Prius story, hope you do better KS.

But to the original post...so what..it leaks, a LOT on the road do, for years..worst case, you get manual steering and a story on the way home..but you still had fun.

Mine's leaking right now at some seal where the steering shaft goes into the rack...meh. I'll have done 3000 miles between the 26th and the 11th. Might have to add a quart.

Good luck Mr. Sikes, its a great event to attend.

In 5000 km's I have only added about 1l. So it doesn't leak that bad, I'm just playing things safe.

It sounds like I could drive it as is, but I probably won't. What's another $500 in the grand scheme right?

As far as the brakes, it looks like the po must have replaced the pads and not done the rotors when they should have been done. Again I'm going to do them regardless of them operating well.

Do the brakes, degrease the engine and underside to get rid of the build up of PS fluid, go to SITM, if it gets worse have a sharp knife close at hand to cut the PS pump belt.

Oh you have changed all your fuel lines haven't you !!!!!!

I thought about pulling mine up on a trailer...lol, but it is currently in a real embarrassing state...She looked beautiful sitting in the junk field...seems not sooo beautiful in front of the house on jackstands...

but the rack don't leak, but the pump is empty....

Adam, one thing to consider is when the PS fluid gets hotter (like it will down in NC) the leak may get worse.

If it was me, I would order a rack, rotors and pads and do them after you return from your trip to Disney. You can get both of these jobs done in less then a day.

Ya, I'm going to do them. Better to be safe. I'm back on the 18th. Taking the family to Disney should give me some brownie points and allow me the garage time afterword. I have already spoken to Roger about the parts.

Since the PS uses ATF, I used Trans-X on my 84. No kidding, not a DROP after a week after I added it. Depending on the cause of your leak, you might not have the same result, but... for $4, what do you have to lose? I've heard it all: it just has stuff in it that causes the rubber to swell, blah, blah, blah. I don't know what's in Trans-X that's not in other brands, but that stuff works--and works long term.

Good luck!
