Under normal circumstances even the exhaust manifolds aren't that hot on a stock 928 idling.
Under hard use (think track duty), with a tuned car you will possibly see this temp in the manifolds.

Plus I would like for you to show me it actually auto ignite at that temp.
It will instantly turn into vapor which is much more volitile. But I doubt it would auto ignite every time. On top of that additives will effect this as will octane rating.

You haven't lived 'til you've seen a line of 50wt oil poured on the barrel of a hard-used Browning M2.

Lets not start qualifying the _entirely_ possible with "it was only at idle" cuz idling commonly happens after driving..and then that true..it has to be right conditions..but hey, it happens every day.

Fact is..gas and hot running engines are dangerous..it can happen...and somewhere in a vapor cloud in an open area near a spill..it'll be the right conditions, just needs heat. Or as said, a spark.

Too much theory. Try what I did and report back!

Just saw this. Was nervous after reading the title. Glad your car survived and your fingers will at a later date.
