Default Rear hatch head liner recover techniques - Done!

My 79 rear hatch headliner was in bad shape. I pulled it mionths ago and am ready to recover.

The original headliner, now badly dried and faded vinyl had inserts sewn in at the sun visor pockets to allow for a easier fit I assume but the later model cars I have seen do not have these pockets but rather are a single pice of vinyl laid over the head liner.

Looks like the sun visor pocket area had the vinyl glued to the head liner board and then the vinyl was pulled tight and glued around the underside edges.

I assume I am not the first to do this. I have planned to glue the pocket areas down first and then deal with getting the vinyl to lay flat in the inside corners of the sun visor pockets. Heat gun/ blow dryer to help stretch the vinyl so it will lay flat?

What tips to folks have?

I took the plunge and finished it this weekend.

Not perfect by Paul or Budd standards but a vast improvement over what I had!

Where did you get the vinyl?

Looks good to me; after all, this is kind of like painting your own house, you are the only one who ever sees issues.

I got the bulk vinyl from Seatz Manufacturing in CA. They sell 928 seat covers on EBAY as well as selling the bulk vinyl. Rob Budd also sells bulk vinyl.

Wow that looks really good, the panel looks straight.

Did you have any warping to deal with?

Was not straight when I pulled it off. I added a 1/8 by 1/2 inch strip of metal to the inside edge of the back end to straighten out the warp caused by a previous leak at the hatch. I secured with banana peel rivets to get as close to flush as possible.

Good job
I purchased a few weeks back a nicely recovered used panel, which looked so much better than what I had

The panel still had warped sections (although not severe like my old one).....installed it and I can see in areas the top roof..

not as bad as it may seems......kept it in because I was tried of looking at the bare roof...I'll try what you did when i have some time to concentrate on her
