Thanks for the input. My plan is to take the pump a part and inspect everything I there,if all looks good i will have the unit rebuild (even tho the car run perfect exept the whining noise). If I see something that I don't like then I'll get me a unit from a 89 s4 that I found for a reasonable price. Thanks again for taking your time to help out in my time of panic

Before I would invest any more time into this project I would determine the health of your engine.
If that TC damage is due to backward pressure from the engine end, your engine thrust bearing at least is damaged, if not more engine internals.
Start by doing a crankshaft end float measurement. Then drain the oil and look for shiny bits in the oil and a grey thick sludge on your drain plug.

If that TC damage is due to backward pressure from the engine end, your engine thrust bearing at least is damaged, if not more engine internals.

It should slip right in. I think the 86.5 has the same enlarged transmission area. You will love the 89 transmission will wake up your car nicely. It is worth a change just for the lower differential. I think the 89 also has better shift points.

Constantine is worried about thrust bearing failure. It is not common to the 85-86 cars. I am sure someone will correct me on this but I have never heard of an 85-86 32 valve with thrust bearing failure. I am sure it can happen I just have not heard or seen one.
Any way you should check the end play on the engine. it is a simple precedure and will bring some peace of mind. You can get a cheap dial indicator at Harbor Frieght and magnetic stand. You can make your own adapters. I suspect you are ok on that end of things. The engine would have stalled long ago for the engine to put that much pressure on the transmission.

Thrust bearing failure can happen to all 928s, even 5 speeds, but especially automatics with stronger 32 valve engines.
The reasons range from our researched cause of drive shaft pullout at the front flex plate clamp, improper maintenance procedures which sets up a forward push in the driveline, to failures of sub-systems, like clutches.
Engines with bad thrust bearings have been found by conducting a crank shaft end play measurement, which then saved the engine from continued internal destruction. It is cheap insurance and not hard to do, we would recommend it for anyone with a 928, especially for those with other drive line problems, such as the OP of this thread.

FWIW I had an 86.5 with a rubbing noise when idling
it turned out to be the flex plate was preloaded
once the pinch was loosened the rubbing went away ,
the clamp on the driveshaft moved about 5mm.
ELGRECO you do need to check the crank end play now

ok first thing first , the 89 tranny wont work on my car(cick down link is not the same. dam it)
now if i did this coretct the play on the crankshaft is 000.70 of an inch or 0.18 mm
i stayd all night spending my time taking the tranny apart and there is no internal damage that i can see.
i do believe and hope that i just had a bearing go bad,i took the flex plate shaft out and the rear bearing is fine

the damage to the pump from tc was probably from before the pklamp instal the tranny was whining from day one(when i bought the car it wasent running that why i paid pennies for it) got it back to the shop corect the no starting part and stella was alive.but from day one the tranny all tho was a litlle loud ,it work fine

OK your measurement of crank end play means its toast.
in inches its from .008 to .016in
in MM its .40 max
New spec for 32V engines is 0.06 to 0.192mm (0.0024 to 0.0076 in). The wear limit is 0.4 mm (0.0157 in).
so you have from .008in. to .016 in. max

0.7 INCH play?!?! Are you sure of this?
Also, what happeend to the flex plate. On the last pic, left lower hole, the endge is all chewed up.

I don't know that you are gaining much ground measuring distortion of the unloaded flex plate.
