what direction does the crank rotate? (if you are looking at the dampener) from the front.

just realized i don't know this....

Clockwise if you are facing the front of the damper/balancer, standing in front of the car.

which way to you want to go? If you want to go forward....then its clockwise.....

IF you want to go reverse....its also clockwise

There is a retired tug-boat around here with the engine exposed with plexiglass so you can see the internal parts. It has a double lobe camshaft, to put it in reverse they stop the engine, switch to the other lobes and run the engine backwards.
