Mike:
Excellent points and yes, I am very fortunate to have such a great group of 928 friends here. That in itself is almost worth the experience.

Now I just need to dig up that incredible post from Greg Brown on the proper way to rebuild and install a LSD.

Hi Greg:

Really sorry to learn of your trans problems.

If you ever need an extra pair of hands, don't hesitate to call.

UPDATE:

Bill Ball came over yesterday and with his expertise we got the trans out.

After taking the top cover off of the trans what we found was the first gear from the front of the trans ( first gear? ) had three teeth chipped up. The next gear ( Second ? ) had one tooth chipped up pretty good.

1st and 2nd gear come as a matched set of gears, along with the lower shaft. Difficult, but not impossible to find a good used 1st and 2nd set.

This was as far as we were able to go yesterday so no idea about the set of gears below the set that we saw.

Everything else in the top set of gears that we looked at looked good. Synchros. dog teeth etc.

Unless you have x-ray vision, almost impossible to tell much about the syncros and the sliders, from this position. Syncro wear occurs on the inside surface of the syncros, not the outside, which is what you are looking at. You need to keep disassembling to know much.

Is it worth tearing further into this trans to rebuild? or would it be more economical to just put oil back in it and drive? or....
Do I search for another transmission?
You are this far....why stop now?

My original 5sp has been out of the car for more than 5 years. Had a used 5sp put in because I couldn't wait to have my 5sp opened up and rebuilt. Assumption was reverse lockout pieces, but about to go to a track event and didn't want to risk catastrophe. The current transmission works great so I haven't been motivated to have the orginal looked at.

If timing is an issue, maybe a temporary used unit would be the least complicated interim solution which would give you more time for the LSD and any rebuild endeavors.

If it were my car, I would probably drive it for a while longer until other life events stabilized and the stresses of car repair are manageable.

Brave new world when enthusiasts are opening up transmissions rather than shops.

Aren't there a lot of close tolerance issues with transmission rebuilds?

I don't make my own beer so maybe I am generally overreliant on craftsmen?
