Default Removed my heads and this is what i found

I removed the head and under the gasket I found thisName: Head Gasket 007.jpg

Size: 68.4 KB The gasket actually looked in good condition on this side. It looks like there was a repair made to the heads somewhere down the road.

Ironically the other side of the heads Name: Cam shaft 002.jpg

Do I need to replace the head or is there some way to address this issue?

Also, the cylinder wall had a groove in it from the piston rings. Name: Head Gasket 012.jpg

Water has eaten them. Good alu welder can fill them up. After machining they will be good enough for reuse.

Having the heads surfaced /machined might remove 90% of that and make them O K to run.

they will probably be OK after some light machine work. Mine might have even been worse (!).

Make sure you stay in spec and watch your headgaskets, there are a 'new' and a 'rebuild' thickness range. Check the WSM!~~

The first pics look like someone has filled in that area with weld. The holes are air bubbles within the weld that were exposed when it was machined afterward.

Yah that has been welded before, a very poor weld job. Take it to a good machine shop they can fix it. Why did you take the heads off?

Started out as a replacement engine for a Rod Bearing failure incident.

i didn't have any history on the engine, so since it was on the engine stand, I decided to do a WP and TB replacement which led to the Porkensioner, which led to an intake refresh, which led to a Rod bearing replacement, which led to a head removal and cleaning of carbon, which is leading to a valve job, and head fill and resurfacing which will lead to a ...

This will then lead to an interior re-fittment, pulling out a couple of dents and dings that occured in the two years of storage, etc.

A glutton for punishment.

Yes I am failing to see a problem here.

What about the scoring in the cylinder wall?

Didn't expect to go this far into it when I started so I didn't measure the compression.

The rings were not stuck that i was aware of. The pistons look good with no visible signs of distortion, cracks, etc. I would say the it is a wear groove over time. Maybe you are right that the rings were stuck in that piston. They are now squeeky clean and freely move. The groove is about 1/32" and you can easily feel it with your fingenail.

Livio - following this out of curiosity. So, the groove in the cylinder is at the top of the piston travel, circumfrencial to the bore (as apposed to an up/down score parallel to the piston travel)? Just trying to see if I am seeing it correctly in the picture.

You interpreted this correctly. I don't think it would be a problem, but I have very little experience in this end of the rebuild. Just the WSMs and the website, along with some help of local R-listers.

Livio, can you take some better/ sharper pictures of the bores?

That head was welded up and re surfaced before so not sure if there is enough material left to re surface it again.

You have the heads from the old engine that might be a better candidate than this one.
