Default Door vent assembly removal

I have the door panels off for recover and am planning on dying the leather on the arm rests. How do you remove the adjustable air vents? They are diifficult to see because of the air supply housing.

Thanks.

Pull them straight up - there are friction tabs on the sides but they don't seem to interlock positively - they mostly rely on a snug fit and gravity

Just had mine out a week or so ago (still working on something else). As per Allan, I pulled them up with no tools and they were not locked on anything that I can remember.

Default Door Vent Assemby Removal

There are four tabs - two tabs, at each end, that are easily broken.
I stuck a flat/thin putty knife/spatula right in the middle of the vent and then slid and lifted to one end while pushing up on the air vent from behind/inside the panel with my other hand.
the putty knife/spatula will stop when it runs into a tab. Steadily force the tab up - the vent will rise slightly and click into an unlocked position.
repeat this for the other end/same side tab and you should be able to remove the air vent without breaking a tab.

Once I had the vent out i cleaned the vent and sprayed it with plastic restorer and let it sit for 12+ hours. the plastic restorer did a much better job as "spray" paint rather than a topical + wipe application
Its worth while cleaning/disinfecting the entire air vent in the panel as well.
For newbies, this is a very satisfying easy level task

Pop out the power mirror switch first if they're still in there real tightly. They were held in firmly on the '82 Weissach I just finished. I had better luck starting from the storage compartment end once I pulled the mirror switch on the left side & the blank on the right side.
