Number 8 is the spring clip that holds the flap in place. The flap that folds down to protect the body while pumping liquid gold.

You can't tell #10 is on the end of the neck unless you get real close and feel the edge. It does show pretty well in this flash picture as slightly different color from the hard plastic neck threads. In the second pic I lifted it a bit with a screwdriver tip. So, I'll bet everyone still has it. It appears hard to remove and blends in so well with the rest of the filler threads that I couldn't tell it was there initially.

Not sure what part you ordered. #8 is a large metal circlip that retains the flap in the outer lip of the filler neck boot, as Roger said.

Well, I just did a long ride to a lunch meeting in the 928, and sloshed quite a bit of fuel around while making waste of a new Dodge Challenger on the Expressway.
There has not been a whiff of fuel smell since using Roger's "test cap". Looking at the schematic and other pictures, it appears that my gas cap is missing the end of the key lock housing, on the inside. I am losing the vapor through the key hole, apparently. Roger, I will run a bit more fuel down and build more vapor in the tank and see what happens.

Bill,
I do have that seal which could be the same as Mark has pictured. It must have a flatter surface underneath the part you are holding with screwdriver. My question is what part of the cap seals against that seal, seems to be in to far to make any contact with cap. I can take the same seal that Mark is showing and place it in the cap flat side out and get a great fit.

Yep, years ago one place I smogged at had a million different adapters, and one of them fit the cap and they showed that it would not seal. There was a barely visible crack in the center section. Since I replaced it, no one else has ever checked.

I don't think it matters the center doesn't create the seal the outer white part does - where it tapers in right at the top of the "U".
Of course if the center of the white part has a hole to the lock tumblers it will leak for sure.
On mine the whole white part seemed to be molded in one piece.

Correct, Alan, that it has nothing to do with sealing. I just wondered if it affected the lock swap. Since my original one was tall and the replacement was short and I don't recall any issue with swapping the lock, other than the usual chore of getting the red cover off, it appears to be odd but irrelevant.
