Default Opinions on brake rotors...

The car (89 S4) failed inspection today. The front rotors are SHOT! They looked so good from the outside looking in, but once the car was up in the air, we could see how bad they really were on the inside. Literally half of the rotor surface is gone.

Been looking around for some replacements.

I see a few sets on Ebay (going for around $150 a set), but I'm not sure how good they are and I've had a problem getting a reply from Roger (I know he is probably swamped right now trying to get caught up).

I need a set by next week.

I found some at local parts place, but they want $107 for one side and $187 for the other side. What is the deal with that? Are they different per side?

What seems to be a good price for a set of front rotors?

They are directionally vented, so yes, different per side.

But THAT difference between sides? As for a manager on that one..something is screwed up.

IMHO, the cheapest ones you can find will get you by unless you're speed racer..and at a later time, get a good set from Roger...and keep the cheapies for emergencies.

PS: I see no reason why two $107 rotors wouldnt work..for now in a pinch. Unless like I said, you're speed racer.

Get new pads too.

Ya - I'm going to double-check those prices locally.

Looks like I'll have to go Ebay and get some cheapy cross-drilled/slotted rotors and get the good ones next time.

Take a look at these:

http://www.bmaparts.com/ShopByVehicl...subcatid=Front Brake Disc&mode=PA

I've used both, for the price of the OP Parts ones you can get three sets which will last longer then the one set of zimmer's.... I've had the OP ones on for the last year, before that I used the "Frozen" Rotors that are ~$200 each. Of course they lasted 7 years (30k miles and 16 two day DE events), to me they were worth it.

There are a surprising number of makers for the rotors. Going for cheap on eBay guarentees you'll get really cheap ones. I'd resist going that route.

I've got a decent set of used ones I could ship.

But best to get new from Rog if possible.

What people above said, go and buy new rotors from Roger (or other 928 retailers). Brakes is something you don't want to cheap out on...

Wholly schmolly.....$30 for a front brake rotor?

I think I'd be worried driving on those.

Got hold of Roger, he is pricing me up some rotors/brakes now.

He needs rotors, right now...to pass.

Id not fault him for going dirt cheap for RIGHT NOW..and they can be emergency rotors for later...after the emergency.

Those GTS rotors are a killer. Make sure they're the real item. I bought some that seemed affordable from NAPA that turned out to be S4 rotors with the wrong P/N attached. Got my money back.

$83 for S front Zimmermans at that website. Many love Roger but can he even buy them for that price?

The cheap rotors are made in China by Winhere. I will not sell them normally.

Zimmerman has stopped the plain & X drilled rotors and they are out there cheap at the moment.
They have replaced them with the coated versions.

Notice how most are call for availability as they are very hard to find.
We can get the cheap Zimmerman right but not the left.

We all buy from the big three wholesalers

"$83 for S front Zimmermans at that website. Many love Roger but can he even buy them for that price"

I buy them for a lot less than that and sell them for $79.95 each - yea of little faith 8>)
I sell ATE OEM even cheaper.

GTS Rotors - yes the plain rotors are expensive and in short supply - we sell for $235 each.

GTS Cast hole rotors are a much better buy unless you track your car - we sell for $168 each.
