Thanks Hilton, I'll be doing a TB/WP very soon as well. Cheers.

Sure glad i live in a state like PA, air pump was chucked with the cat immediately after i brought it home.

anyone ever figure out what percentage of power is lost to turning the air pump. It is small but every bit counts.

I just want my euro to be all original. If I ever sell it, it makes a big difference to potential buyers. Unmolested is the term you often hear in terms of desirability.

BTW, MA has no emissions on pre 1996 cars now.

I hear you, but i don't think removing something you can re install in 20 minutes lowers the value at all. Just have to keep them on the rack in your garage.
Unless you're concerned with "global warming" i don't see the benefit in running the pump or cat. That term is a bad one btw.

I gain an intrinsic benefit running the pump on my 87.; the satisfaction of having it running like it did when it left the factory.

My other two 928's I removed the air pump (I'll be fitting a vacuum pump in its place on the 89), but for my latest '87 I decided I wanted it to be set up as it left the factory, so I've re-plated all the bits in the engine bay, PC'ed the intake factory-looking silver, and rebuild all the accessories so it all works as stock. It also has stock cats on it too.

You can argue the "technical" benefits all day long, but at the end of the day "because I want to" trumps all of them

I don't honestly don't think the air pump does a damn thing on an LH Euro. No cats, no 02 sensor and no feedback. Might as well be on the shelf in the garage.

? That's what i'm saying, don't worry about the resale value, make it run better.

That's right Brad, make it run as intended by the Porsche Engineers, the emissions and fuel efficiency regulations were something of an obstacle for them and made the car slower, much slower.
As we all know, Porsche intended on 300 BHP out of the box in the late '70s, we got much, much less. Porsche could have offered a 928 very close to the magic 10lbs. per HP ratio and if they could have, the 928 probably would have sold 4 times what it did and given the respect it deserved, not reviled by the true believers of the day.
220 bhp out of 4.5L is pathetic and could be achieved 3 decades before the 928 came along in American pre-war (WWII) push-rod iron lumps..
We can thank our glorious leaders in Washington for the low output as this market was most important to the company's survival. I don't want to start on our early Porsche 928 US model headlamps. My '72 Jaguar was choked and blind at night when i bought it also. Again, jerks in DC..

I looked at that pump with honest disgust from the moment i popped the hood. What an afterthought and so not Porsche x10.

You can simply hand the bolt-on emissions equipment to the new owner if you ever had to sell, or re-install it before you sell and no one will know or care IMO. If they do, oh well they'll get over it quickly. It is not really a 'mod'.

If you do remove the pump, i have a small replacement belt part # for you.
and can help you, just PM me.

Porsche could not have been pleased about running another belt off the crank to run a heavy alum. lump air-pump after making such an effort to keep their new flagship model as light and powerful as they possibly could.

As I read this...I realize, the plumbing off my air pump is all disconnected...pump is still connected and has a belt going to it...I bought all the bits to put it back, but I am really thinking...why?

I want the ability to go back original as well, but in this mild resto-mod / resurrection, I want a driver not a showpiece....at least right now...I read somewhere a 20" or 21" belt replaces the smog belt???

Matt, my car is a not a US model and was never federalized when it was privately imported here so why the ROW cars have air pumps is a mystery to me. BTW, I'm pretty close to 10lb/Hp stock.

I know, Europe adopted the same smog regs by then, it seems the US leads the way on this stuff.

I know you've got power, i'd love to own your car.

How did you come to own it and can i see a few more pics?

With Club Sports, Manholes as seen in Hemmings and now, Turbo Twist II. Love it but also love air-cooled 911s.

All i can say Brad is if you ever sell, i'm interested.
But if you remove anything from stock, i'll have to knock the price down.
That's a sweet ride.
