Often you will find broken/missing bolts on the water pump will extra silicone goop. And the minute you touch a car you own the repair. Many 928 owners are just not expecting a $2,000-$3,000 repair bill. And after they pay it they expect EVERYTHING to be good for a long time. Sadly often there are too many other things which also needed to be done.

Mickster,
I just spoke to Sonny, and it sounds like Motor Mounts and oil pan gasket would be the next stage on the car. Needs to be addressed, but not immediately. He's sourcing a waterpump (aftermarket) - Laso, and will compare the factory belt to gates for which ever is less expensive. Seems like a good guy to work with. I'm going to visit his shop on Fri just to make a formal introduction and to check out my shark of course. Lol. But $2000 is starting to sound more reasonable now that he mentioned all the other wear items like rollers and such while he's in there. Definitely don't want to take any short cuts.
I will let you guys know how it goes. Hoping to get this car back sometime next week which will be in time for the Hershey event. Off topic, but any of you NYC guys out there who are interested in going and want to caravan 928 style down, we should meet up.

This is why Mechanics will charge more to work on 'old' cars and 'do-it-yourself' guys hesitate to take on other peoples 'projects'. Slippery slope, and every 'customer' wants things perfect (new car smell, fresh toilet paper, etc.. )....

Wouldn't a Speedmount fix both the motor mount and oil pan gasket problem by crushing the gasket with the weight of the engine? - just kidding.

If only the motor mounts were changed, and the pan gasket wasn't, 4 hrs is plenty. You don't need to pull the cross memeber to get the mounts out but you do, if the oil pan needs to be removed.

Have you worked on a car with the later mounts? It takes 4 of us, who know what we are doing, to get it done in 5 hours.

Wait a minute, are you saying it takes 4 of you, 5 hours to changed the mounts? That's 20 hrs! Just checked my notes, the first time I did it took around 10hrs (no including the pan gasket). No notes for second time, but it was a lot less.

Yes, I did two S4s but did the oil pan too. It looked like there was enough room to squeez them out, when the engine is lifted. I'm sorry if this is not the case, sure as hell it looked like it would to me.

No, that's four of us working at the same time, a few beer breaks included, doing mounts and a pan gasket. For me, it takes me 9-11 depending on the amount of grime I have to clean up. That's mounts and pan. I'm getting ready to find out how fast I can do mounts on my own car, two people sans beer (kidding, there will be beer) in a weekend or so. Shouldn't be any cleaning since we did mounts last year and I got the failed, Chinese Ford mounts.
As as rule, I never drink beer when workign onthe car, seems to take away my concentration and wasts time. This is just a rule for me. Also, I like company too but, it seems to slow the process to a crawl. I work a lot faster alone. If I need a hand, ask my wife or a neighbour to help for a few minutes and then back to working alone. Once I get into a rythm, the hours go by very quick.

there with unknown mfr. date with metal (vs. plastic) impeller or who knows what else. Don't take the chance on getting the wrong water pump and have
him get the right one from Roger. You will sleep better...
