Default new found respect for my 30 year old car !!

driving home from work this evening the fuel pump started to make strange noises and caused complete loss of engine power.with 25 miles to get home i was fairly sure i was going to be stopped on the side of the road trying to work out how to get a tow home.but to my delight my old 928 just rumbled on regardless with the pump in the death throws.only a fraction of trottle could be used and at times i was down to 20 mph going up hills.it soldiered on relentlessly getting me home without the embarrassment of a breakdown . this pump has given plenty of warning i had bought a new one for it last october(it went into winter storage soon after) after hearing a noise in it but never fitted it because the noise didn't return.my fault completely.the build quality on these old cars is 2nd to none, and continues to impress me. I F'N LOVE MY 928 !!!

Glad you made it home Dogleg.
I love my 928 as well and they are (in the words of Top Gear) a car that could eat a tractor.

Did the same in a Volvo once, made it home OK and the only damage was that in addition to replacing a fuel pump I also got to replace the fuel distributor as bits of pump dying first loaded up the filter an finally enough made it through to jam the fuel distributor. Hope yours is just noisy, but $100 tow is often the cheapest option by a lot.

filter is only on since last year so should be ok.might replace again as a precaution.in my experience it just cloggs the filter, worst case. but anything is possible.

Brain.......the pumps when they start to go get loud or louder that normal.............go to the back rear passenger side with the engine running and you'll hear it. Unfortunately they also quit like a light switch and your stranded. given your car is a '84 it might be good PM.

Dogleg........when you order the new pump get the metal line between the pump and filter as well as the crush washers and new filter; its great peace of mind.
Been a while since I was in Dublin; need another guiness factory visit

I too find new respect for my 928; everytime I take it out.

Last nights trip to Wallymart was so fun. Going there to shop, I break even on the gas it takes to get there and back instead of the corner store.
