What type paint is on my 86.5 928?
What type paint were they using in 1986?
This was before base coat/clear coat...wasnt it?
Acrylic lacquer?....

Depends on the color of the car. If you use cleaner/ polish on the car and color comes off on the rag it is NOT clear coated. Clear coat comes off clear. Basic red, white, black were not clear coated as early as many metallics were.

Yes the White Gold is a two part job. I doubt you can get the paint today even if you wanted it. The German clear coats in the 1980s were inferior to other paints and will oxidize. Today clear coats are far superior. For most German cars body shops use paint from Germany when repainting German cars.
You can buy a matching base paint from The Restoration Shop in San Diego. They sell several different clear coats as well. If you are patching in and not repairing a complete panel then you might consider using acrylic lacquer for the clear coat. It will blend easily and can be sanded and polished with no edges or blemishes.
