3.09 Ring&Pinions, where are they now?
I understand there was a batch of 3.09 gears made some years ago.
What became of them?
Is anyone running them?
Are there any sitting around unused that need a home?

Hi Mike-
Dunno the current whereabouts, or whether you have the article on them, but here's a pdf copy of said article if you don't already have it. Might provide a lead or contact info.

$2500 for just the 3.09 ring & pinion back in 1999?.
Have you ever held a 5-speed 928 pinion gear in your hand? It amazes me that anyone could even begin to make a few of them, for only $2500.

Mike as mentioned in my other thread, these people make the ring pinions, ages ago I checked that one of there crown wheels had the same PCD as the 928 and that just leaves them to make the pinion which should just be a modification to an existing program.

The ring and pinion is different for auto and manual ,whilst the auto pinion bolts on the output shaft from the auto box from memory , isnt the manual arrangement part of the shaft that support most of the gearbox ratios ?
THerefore would be expensive , it would be great to have the manual arrangement like the auto so you could change ratios a little simpler .
Although either way none of the above is a cheap alternative particularly with such a small market .

why? a 3.09 added to a 2.75 will give an S4 gear box almost idential ratios, sans, 5th. (but a super low hill clibing 1st which would be useless)
a 3.09 to a S4 gear box almost does the same thing it creates the same ratio , BUT, you still have the nasty spacing of 5th from 4th and magnifying the problem, is the fact that you now HAVE to use 5th now. Not good for racing! you want the post shift rpm to be at least 72%, any less and the rpm is too much for the HP curve to support the HP you need to accelerate. interstingly, there is no gain with most 928s to use a close ratio gear box, the HP curve is so broad.
save your money for something that will actually make your car go faster, not for towing a semi tractor trailer up your driveway, or pulling a yacht out of the water .
