How important is this on GTS's (or other 928 models)? Just curious if it is needed when running in a stock config and not tracking the cars or driving them particularly hard...

Probably not that important for performance or longevity. On the S4 it serves to keep oil out of the intake, and on the GTS it addresses the blue smoke exhaust puff upon excelleration and the pinging, if present.

Or something like that.............

In terms of quarts per 1000 miles, how much oil do your GTSs burn, James?

James - If you buy one, I will too I definitely have the puff of smoke when I floor it. Have been thinking about this since Aryan resurfaced the "sharkvent" thread. And then "buzz-kill" Sean said DR is a year+ behind on back orders. Although I'm not sure if that's for all MYs.

I get smoke under high rpm accel on the GTS's (both of them...more on the '92 with 135k miles).

I burn a bit over 1qt per 1000 miles on both GTS's.

Here's what 700 miles per quart looks like. Well, except for the 'loose' con rod...

"Consuming oil is a good thing in these cars--it keeps the exhaust lubricated."

YUCK! Thanks for sharing...NOT!

Why didn't Porsche fix those engines? How did they not get it??? Even at that, they are AWESOME! I'd take a 5.4 over a 5.0 any day!

Default My take on the subject

If you have ever siphoned gas from a tank you can understand how easy it is for oil or oil vapors (with the factory design) to flow (to be siphoned) from the PS cam cover aft vent to the lower located "Y" connector located before the throttle valve.

I therefore wanted the Provent intake to be at a higher point than the PS aft vent and now if there's anything coming from PS aft vent it gets separated in the Provent, oil and vapors back to the crankcase and scrubbed air back to the intake.

For sure the engine appears to have a lot more power since I’m no longer have oil vapors blend in with the gasoline and in addition no more knocks or pinging of course in my case having replaced leaky TB and flappy shaft seals has helped a lot to.

I’m very pleased with the outcome so far for me it has given me a new base line of how well the car can run when everything is working right.

it is proven that oil ingested with gas will lower the effective octane rating of the fuel. This is one of the reasons I think that GTS's have more issues with pinging. They burn more oil and the oil burning lowers the octane rating and that will cause pre detonation....

The stroker, with a stock GTS breather setup, burned a quart per ~900 miles over the first 2500 miles. I'm embarrassed to admit that it's been nearly a year since my oil scavenging stuff was installed and that I haven't had the chance to play with sharktuning, so I started working on it again last weekend. I am finding that I need a bunch more fuel- the entire non-WOT fuel map is about 1 AFR unit lean. And it'll take a bunch more timing advance than I could run before.

Pre-Provent, I gave Brendan a short joyride up the hill one day. Parked it, went in and ate lunch, when we came back out and started it, we 'fogged' the parking lot on startup with blue smoke. No 'fogging' now, at any time. The engine is definitely breathing 'differently' without the oil vapor in the intake (my Provent return hoses are still dry inside, despite a bunch of hooning around on Saturday. At the 'next' stop light I had a new E63 owner ask me how many hp I had. (he totally blew me off the line but I more or less managed to keep up...

Between selling a house/moving to Germany, I missed your thread last year, Rob. I have some reading to catch up on (27 pages)... all related to oiling, Provent, etc.
