What's the width of your rear wheels? When you say you have some room to go I assume you mean there's room between the tire sidewall and the fender lip?

Width and offset will help.

Is there an easy way to measure the width of the wheel without removing the tire?

Some factory wheels have the width and offset on each side of the valve stem. You could also try a dental mirror with a flashlight to look at the backside of the spokes to see if you can find the width.

Depends on the type of wheel you have.

I have run a 295/35 17 Kumho's on the rear of my 1980 Euro S with no problems. The determining factors are wheel width and offset.

I am running 275/40/17 khumo on 9" et 50 rims. Might be 1/4" clearance, but I think it is a bit less, no rubbing however.
