Default Penetrating oil

This came up in a thread and it is worth repeating. Swiped from another forum.

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

I like using Liquid Wrench in the little squeeze bottle. Cheap and goes right where I want it. Keep a spray can handy for some applications.

Good info, I think WallyP posted it here once, some time ago. I've used the ATF-acetone mix, works fine.

Same as 3 in 1 oil isnt it?

I like to have a variety of penetrating oil handy, try one, try another, use some heat, hit with a hammer, eventually it works.

Kroil usually has some kind of online deal going, two king sized cans shipped for $17.95, http://www.kanolabs.com/google/

Marvel Mystery oil is I have heard anyway, pretty close to ATF.

Other goops also have some tricks and my work better in some circumstances, guts of an old post I made in Garage journal below.
