Got back from the inspection and decided to go through with the purchase.
The color is code 443 9 3 braunkupferdiamant (copper brown metallic)and the interior is Z 6(not sure....cork?)
The pics do make the car look better than in person, but it is a 34 year old car with 87,000 miles.
Interior should clean up nicely with only a few issues. There is a crack in the dash from the window all the way down the front just right of the pod.
The upper corner of the rear hatch window trim has come unglued(should be an easy fix)
Driver seat has separation between the seat cushion and bolster at the seam.
The rest of the vinyl and all carpeting is very nice.
Paint is decent. The roof panel was repainted and the passenger rear panel had repaint. Actually it had a little ding in front of the wheel so probably a small fender bender at some point. Front bumper cover is a bit faded. The rest is pretty nice with the typical nicks and scratches. It has a tape pinstripe. When I get it, I will test a small area to see if it comes off without issues.
The car started easily and settled in at a steady idle. Blew out condensation for about 20 seconds then no smoke at all. I took it for a drive but the shifter cup bushing is so worn that I had trouble finding the gears so I didn't get on it too hard. It drove well with no stumble or apparent issues. Records indicate a trans. rebuild about 25k miles ago.
The wheels are in really nice shape. According to the records, they were "plated" in the late 80's for $100 each in California.
Electrically everything seemed good. Windows raised and lowered easily, A/C actually worked, all lights worked and all the gauges, which are still German with the exception of the speedo. The headlights are the larger H4s without the trim piece.
There is a stack of paper work since 1985 when the car was imported. It has the original certificate of federalization which was something to the affect of being able to import 1 car only into the US??? Didn't read through it.
I will be heading back up next weekend to pick it up.

Got the car delivered yesterday and immediately started tearing into it. Shifter cup bushing is toast and I have a spare to put in. Had to drop the exhaust at the header side to access it and stopped at that point. It is also leaking badly at the oil pan gasket. The bolts are torqued down way too much. Looks like it may have a silicone gasket so I will loosen all the bolts and re torque them correctly and see if that works. Would be nice if I didn't have to replace it.
The car has limited slip and aside from the gasket leak, it is a pretty clean car. Look forward to some TLC on it. Hopefully, I will like it when I am finished. Never had such an early 928 before.

keep us posted on the progress, and especially your impressions of how it drives versus your other sharks.

Update on the car. I am going to be selling it as soon as I receive the Kentucky title. After getting the car I did a few things before I even started driving it. The shifter cup and rear couple bushings were totally gone so the shifting was incredibly vague. I replaced the shifter cup and had a good spare rear coupler that I installed. Now the shifting is like it was meant to be. I also changed out the gearbox fluid and did an oil/filter change and put in a new air filter. At this point I decided to try driving it to see if I really liked it before I put more money and labor into it. Sad to say, I just really like my '84 Euro S better. I then thought about just refurbishing this car and hang onto it. However, not that the weather has become nice, golf season is starting. I need to finish a few projects on my '84(trans swap and a few other things), and will also be taking delivery on a new Mini Countryman tomorrow, so I need the space.
The car is a '78 Euro 5 spd non sunroof car with limited slip. It will need a new oil pan gasket. The PO had torqued the bolts too tight and tried stopping the leaks with gobs of silicone. I loosened the bolts, cleaned up the silicone and re-installed and correctly torqued the bolts with "anaerobic" sealer???? It helped minimize some, but it still seeps. I have a new silicone gasket that will come with the car.
I have all records and paperwork on the car since 1984 when it was imported into the US. It even has the original import docs.
The good:
As mentioned, Euro non sunroof, limited slip, rare single side mirror car. So far it appears everything works except the volt meter is not working. I need to clean the contacts behind the dash. Even the AC blows ice cold and it is all original equipment. Shifting is smooth(records indicate a trans rebuild about 15k miles ago if I recall) and acceleration is strong. Interior is very nice. The only real flaw is a single crack in the dash and some separation in the driver seat cushion only noticeable when you pull the vinyl apart. All the original tools, and spare as well as a little bulb and relay holder that I had never seen before. It wedges in behind the tool tray. The car even has the original Porsche cassette deck. All fuses have been replaced and cleaned. It also had a new radiator installed at some point. The records indicate the muffler was replaced with a new OEM one so it is not rusted out.
Exterior of the car has had some areas of repaint but overall is real nice driver quality. The wheels were re-plated in the past and are still quite nice. Tires are like new. All the glass is really nice. The pictures show the car with the 8" H4 Euro headlights. I swapped them out with the 7" Euro H4s from my '84 Euro. I think the chrome rings look better on this car than on my black car. The car is a great driver or could be an excellent restoration candidate to show quality without needing a ton of expensive parts, just labor. Also comes with a ' 78 Owners manual and a single thicker volume of the workshop manuals.
If anyone is interested, contact me through PM. When I get the title(@2 weeks) I will be selling it. I will get some more pictures this weekend of the interior and under side of the car.

Just being realistic. When my '84 blew the timing belt last year, I pulled the motor and proceeded to replace most everything.....still upgrading it. When summer and golf season hit, I hardly ever worked on it until the fall. My Ferrari isn't getting the $ I am wanting for it and the last thing I need is 3 toys with time to drive 1 only occasionally. New Mini is coming home tomorrow and I would like a garage space for it. If the 308 sells, I might keep the '78. However, I won't sell the '84 Euro S before the '78.

Doug,

That is one nice example of a late 1978. That the dash is in perfect shape is a miracle. I do think the 78s will go up in value faster than the mid 80 cars. They are just better driving. The metallic colors in this age had clear coat problems so it would not be surprising to see the roof repainted and often the rear hatch and hood. Some paint it in single stage which is a mistake, but a good two stage with clear done right would be impossible to tell.

I have the US twin of this car except leather seats with 60K miles. This is a car to keep as original as possible - with the exception maybe the front brakes.

Good luck with the car.

Unfortunately the dash does have one large crack from front to back just right of the pod and is not shown in the picture. Other than that, the interior really is exceptionally nice. I did a little cleaning with simple green and a scrub brush and it looks good.
