Default How to mount rear license plate on a Euro

Hi all,

Newbie to this forum, but I have owned my 78 Euro-spec for 29 years (which my wife never forgets, since we have been married for only 27 years!).

Yesterday afternoon as I left the office to go home, I found that someone who apparently needed it more than me had stolen my rear license plate. When I went to put the new plate on, I realized that I couldn't recall exactly how it mounts (darn this CRS). I remember that behind the plate were two black rubber cushions/spacers that the screws went through, similar to what's in this Ebay photo, but what nuts do the screws screw into? My plate had been on there for a long time, and I don't remember. The two mounting holes in the plastic are all that's there now, and they're not threaded like the front holes are, and if there were ever any nuts behind them on/around the steel bumper, they're not there now. I didn't have a bracket; I just drilled holes through the US plate to mount in the Euro holes.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

I think mine was like that when I got it, maybe bolts and nuts on the back. Being a finicky b@stard, I hate drilling extra holes in plates, so here is what I did.
Get a plate (marine ply, alloy (at least 5mm thick) as big as the number plate, and drill to use std plate mounting holes. Then locate this plate on the mounts such that the license plate will be in the best location - ie high enough for the lights to show it well, but not so high as to obscure the towing eye hole. Locate where this puts the mounting holes in the bumper on this plate, drill the plate so it lines up, and countersink the holes so the bolts do not stick up. Mount to the car, then attach the licence plate over the top. If the horizontal distance between the std holes in the bumper are the same as between the holes in your licence plate, you can more easily do this with a couple of strips of alloy, mounted vertically. Your bolt set looks like its only missing a couple of nuts (pref nylocs) to go under the bumper...
pic attached with licence plate removed - it is attached using the inner pair of holes visible at the top of the plywood. The two lower screws visible are ~4mm od, ~50mm long, metal threads (not self tappers), and screw into holes in the actual alloy bumper. Not sure if I drilled/tapped them, but I think they were like that on arrival.
The black fitting with a lead is a charge socket, which has a fused lead direct to the battery, completely hidden by the licence plate.

There's a bracket that adapts to those holes. You can get a used one from 928 International.

I think the OP's other problem is how/what any screws involved attach to or engage in? His mounts look like they have no threads in sight. I was unble to find a pic of anything useful at 928intl in this area, aside from 87-95 models.
