Today I drove down to Nogales, AZ to pick up my boots. There was some good news and most sad news when I arrived. The good news is the boots look even better in person and fit just as one would expect a custom pair of to fit, like stepping into butter. The sad news, really sad news, is that Mr. Paul Bond has died. He was 96.
I can't tell you how sad this makes me. The world has lost a true gentleman and craftsman. I was told by his son that my boots were the last pair he worked on, which in itself was rare these days as he hasn't worked leather in the last few years. His son relayed something his Dad said when the boots were finished, "He said they were as beautiful a pair of boots he's ever had the pleasure of making". I suppose he probably felt that way about each pair he has ever made, matters not to me. These boots are special.
All of the employees came round me while I tried them on. Have to admit there were a few tears rolling down the cheeks of a few of us. They were hoping I would have brought the Turquoise Metallic car with me to pick up the boots. I promised them a return trip when the car is complete.
It's rather silly for a car to evoke so many emotions, but there you have it, 928's are unique and special, sometimes the people affiliated with them are too.

Really, really sorry to hear that Dan,
I was looking forward to meeting this great craftsman.
From that point of view, I think I can understand why he was compelled to work on these. The design, the leather, the color scheme, gave him an opportunity to push forward and create something new, even to himself. And for a craftsman, that is a treasure in itself.
This man will be remembered fondly by many.

Very Faustian, wow.
Kudos for providing inspiration for a final project that he could be so proud of, before his rest.
All those years, imagine the things that people probably requested to personalize their boots wayback, the priorities that would've been reflected in those times, and where things are now. Quite a span.

I thought you already knew this and that is what spurred the original post! I am so sorry you only just found out and found out as a bad surprise while picking the boots up.
Yes, we need more artists and gentlemen like that!

I'm SO glad you discovered his presence in Nogales, and were able to make the connection - then to have him make such a special pair of boots for JUST your feet, with the special leather and colors that match your long awaited 928 S4. These boots will always be special for you, and the fact that they were the last - and in his words "as beautiful a pair of boots he's ever had the pleasure of making" adds even further to the special nature of this transaction and possession.
Wear them long and proudly - in his memory.
