Default Searching for LEDs for Pod lighting on OB

Hi all,

I've been reading the numerous guides on pod lighting, but they mainly focus on S4 or later cars. Does anyone know which LEDs are required to light the pod on a 79?

I know Jager do kits but with $65 shipping to the UK it's coming to crazy money for some LED bulbs and I can't afford it.

Thanks for any help,

Joel

Hi Joel, i just have placed all led light on my GT '90 pod. You must have only little patience.. ;-)
Take out all the pod taking care of the plugs.
Take out every lamps and check each one. (on my car there are only two types....)
download this pdf :

http://www.google.it/url?sa=t&rct=j&...zgrunQ&cad=rja

Look every lamp you have and compare with the illustrated document.
Every lamp have one code like T5, T10 etc... (compare with image and Watt)
Take a look on ebay putting on the search bar what you need. (example : T5 led, T10 Led...) Very easy.
I changed all the pod lamp spending about 20 Euro.
Looks very fine.
You also can change the colour of the pod buying blue led, it's very fine.
Be careful to replace the old lamps with another led with SAME size, lenght etc..
Bye
Francesco

Joel, the illumination lamps on your '79 will need to be replaced by the Jager kit (also available from Nicole at Hookedoncars.com) The problem with doing it any other way is that LEDs are directional light. The older cars use an incadescent lamp with it's 360 degree light feeding a fiber optic "wedge" to illuminate the instruments. Just replacing the incadescent with an LED doesn't work because the LED doesn't direct the light towards the wedge. The best way so far to increase your illumination is to mount the LED (directional light) oriented properly within the fiber optic"wedge". That's what the Jager kit does.
It replaces the original wedge with a wedge that has an LED built-in.

Here is a link to an ebay supplier from thailand that sells a LED instrument lighting replacement refractor.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-928-...item2eb6302e6c

I recently did the hardwire conversion on my pod. As part of that I cleaned off the failing reflective paint off the outside of the prism reflectors and then applied RC model reflective foil tape, $5 for a 6inch by 2foot piece, that has adhesive on one side but reflective on both. I also put this tape on the inside of each bulb socket. The results we quite good with the standard bulbs.

$65 (75% of the total item cost) to mail three LEDs would make me pass too. Have you tried e-mailing/PMing Nicole (Hooked On Cars) to see if she could ship to you? On her website, I didn't see international shipping, but it's worth asking.

Looking at the PET, believe it's a 3w bulb part number 900.631.019.90 and you would need three. But I don't know if that's an 1156, 1157, etc. for you to cross-reference with an LED.

FWIW, while you have the pod out, I would recommend converting all the warning lights to LED. The cost would be about the same for those size bulbs in LED. Ed's guide should have a lot of the smaller LEDs you would need--give it a couple minutes to download; it's a large file. http://www.ed.scherer.name/Porsche_9...0to%20LEDs.pdf

And I think there were some references to OBs in Keith Widom's thread too. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-looooong.html

I can do First Class Mail for $8 (not recommended, as it can take a long time and is not traceable), or Priority Mail International for $14 (includes delivery confirmation; takes about 8 days).

The other thing to watch out for on LEDs ---- usually they have wires looped over the base of the glass wedge for sockets that only have power on ONE side and ground on the other.....The 928 sockets are such that using the LED as delivered will short out the traces to these LEDs!!! I found a report of this by another user here when I was doing mine. You need to check the bulbs, and if necessary bend the wires so they are ONLY on one side of the wedge. And they will only light when the polarity is correct....

For my '78 Ob I purchased LEDS from superbrightleds.com Tel # 314 972 6200.. They offer a dizzying array of LEDS. I bought (6) WLEDx5: 5LED Wide Angle Wedge Base Bulb-WLED-NW5: Natural White for pod gauge lights- $3.94 each, and (6) 74-x: Wedge Base LED bulb-74-W: Cool White for the light switches, etc. surrounding the pod -$1.19 each. Bought (6) of each so I would have a few more than needed in case of some being faulty or my ham fistedness destroying one or two. The light switch and other pod switch bulbs are a little too long so you'll have to carefully file the bottoms down a bit and they will fit and work. Great results-gauges are finally bright enough to read and the pod switches, I discovered, are all a different color and look great without being garish.
