944/951 phone dials on the 928
I'm 21 and new to the 928 scene having owned a 924 in my 'apprenticeship', I have a set of 16x7 phone dials on my silver 928.
I think they look great but I've seen the lipped/dished 8" and even 9" 944 and 951 phonies that I think would look great on the rear of my car.
My 928 has the standard 65mm offset. I've heard that many 944/951's have a different spacing and so if I fitted these they will stick out of the rear guards.
Is there any 16 x 8" or 9" 1 piece phone dials that will fit the rear my 928?

I got a set of staggered 7x16 and 8x16 from an '88 944 turbo on ebay. They fit perfectly with the factory spacer but left no room. I'm pretty sure from my research that you have to use no spacer and open lug nuts to use the older lipped ones.

Thanks heaps guys, it's great to talk to someone who is actually using a pair of 944 rims!
What I have concluded so far (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong):
87+ 8" 944 rims are compatible as these have a 52.3mm offset. They don't project inwards at all so the extra inch is added to the outer side of the wheel.
The dished ones are from 944's from years 86 and earlier, as far as I know these have a 23.3mm offset that stick out 55mm more than my current rims... but also have 29mm more clearance on the inside.
The 81-84 928 (unfortunately mine is a 79 model) have a longer stud with a factory 21mm spacer, removing the spacer and using open lug nuts will mean the earlier 'lipped' wheels will just fit under the guards
Another option is to get 3 piece autostrada monza's like these!

Modifying a set of dished 944 rims would be ideal for both handling and perfect fit, I'm going to take my car down to these guys: extensivewheelservices.com.au who recon they might be able to widen the existing wheels without me having to do any modifications to guards etc.

Not sure where you got 81-84, but you are correct that your '79 hasn't the studs. But I don't understand how this a bad thing?

Wheel dynamics quote 81-84.
Though as my car is so beautifully original and immaculate, I'm not into radical changes like these guys are, putting near identical phonies in a wider width is as far as I'll go.

I say 'unfortunately' not an 81-84 as I really like the early dished 944 wheels with the lip as compared to the later versions, as mine don't have spacers it won't be a simple job of just taking them off and mounting the wheels.
Off that topic a little, I've just seen your 2 press cars! My Dad back in his years of spray painting had a very early life size poster of a white manual 928 with Pasha, it was damaged when moving house but one day I would love to own an identical car! Congratulations and best of luck with the restoration!

the 16x9 phonies are extremely rare, they came only on 951 cup cars, are made of magnesium, and only available in early (23.3 mm) offset. The last set of 951 cup phonies I saw on ebay sold for $2300 (16x8 fronts and 16x9 rears).
