It does follow the RPMs. I just got done pulling the front cover off. The front TT clamp was very loose. I was able to break it free with the wobble end of an allen wrench w/o a breaker. Down side was I didnt realize the starter stayed with the inspection cover. imagine my surprise when I got the last bolt out and tapped it with a mallet. Plus side I can now get that stripped bolt out of the starter.

If the front clamp were so loose the flywheel was spinning while the TT shaft was not, making that noise, you wouldn't be going anywhere. This also would ruin the splines on the TT and clamp. Let us know what you find there. It is possible for sounds to transmit down the shaft and appear to come from somewhere else, but I don't expect that the front clamp is the problem. If it is, the TT and clamp (only sold as a unit with the flexplate) must be replaced.

Got it all back together and no change. Now I will need to dig further. Looks like the trans will need to come out next weekend. i may also start shopping for another trans. I will also replace all the seals and bearings while I am at it.

If the noise is from inside the tranny, such as the primary pump or further back, a "good" used tranny is probably the most practical option. Getting a replacement pump would cost more than a used tranny.

However, it's possible this is a seized TC cover bearing, which would be an easy, cheap fix. I have not heard of them seizing (they usually wear and rattle or whine), but there's always a first time. And it could be the TC itself. Anything beyond that, a tranny replacement is more practical.

Started the car today and went for a quick spin and the noise is gone. It is shifting very bad from 1st to 2nd. It will like pop out of gear and then back in causing the rpm to spike up. Then when I came to a stop it took a few seconds to down shift once stopped.

Is the fluid level correct? Mine would do something similar when it got low. Sticky shift valves will do this too. They can respond well to adding Trans-X or similar tramission treatment. I don't see how this would account for the bad noise, but you say that is gone. I'd change the fluid and filter and add a can of Trans-X or similar.
