Default power steering pressure line

I just finished the replacement of the power steering pressure line and have some notes on the procedure for those that have not yet attempted the repair..

First it is kind of a pita.. not terrible, but not something i want to do again soon.

Here is how i did the job.
  1. drain the radiator to remove the upper hose for access.
  2. i have electric fans, and removed them
  3. i removed the front intake that sits on top of the radiator
  4. intake tubes were removed.
  5. unbolt alternator and drop out of the way
  6. remove the drivers side coil.. you will need the access.....
  7. i unclamped the two hoses from the resivoir and did my best to capture the remaining fluid
  1. remove the drivers side front wheel... i forgot tho list jackcar and put on stands, etc..... sorry for the oversight
  2. unbold both sides of the sway bar... porsche put it directly under the banjo bolt at the rack, you cannot remove the bolt with the sway bar in place
  3. go under the car and find the back of the power steering pump, it will have one hose that clamps with a hose clamp and the other that has a bango bolt
  1. this line goes up by the coil then back towards the rear and then down. remove the clamp on the downward section
  2. go back under car and look at steering rack.. it is hard to tell which one is the tube you want.. it is the lower one... unbolt it...
  3. you now can shimmy and work the line out.. i took mine out from the bottom.
  4. i had a shop replace the hose section... but whatever you do, repair or factory replace....beware of those banjo bolts... they are a scintilla different.. they look the same diameter, but they are not... DONT MIX THEM UP.... i did, and after fighting for over an hour to get the rack bolt started, and tight i went to install the pump banjo... the bold threads passed through the banjo, but the smooth section was a few thousants too large.... i tried and tried.... then finally had to remove the lower, and reinstall...AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG
  5. i installed the pressure line first, then reinstalled the resivoir.and it's hoses... when installing the supply hose from the res. to the pumpDO NOT fire off an email to Roger that he does not know his parts and sent you the wrong hose, and you had to have the car fixed that day, and blah blah blah...recheck the routing first... it will save you a lot of embarrasment and a long apoligizing email... trust me on this one.....lol
  6. reinstall everything and double check all connections
  7. drive the crap out of it...

i screwed up the list option and the numbers are all messed up....
but i fixed the car right... i swear...

A couple of q's because I'm probably going to do the same thing (Maybe) before SITM....

I'm guessing you disconnected the battery
Any issues with Steering Rack leaking?
Second to last step was refill reservoir and did you have to work the steering to get fluid through the rack?

Thanks, Steven!

Looks like you're having all the fun!!! My car is getting jealous... I'll have to do something this weekend. Have a door vent that needs attention... Maybe I'll throw on a coat of wax.....

Anything to avoid the PS hoses...

I can confirm this is unpleasant job and tricky to route the line just right - easier when engine mounts in good condition so there is clearance above crossmember. But on a RHD I didn't need to remove top hose or coil, and I'm pretty syre reservoir and hoses stayed in place?

jej,

yes, disconnect the battery...
no issues with my rack leaking, just the hoses.
no issues with working the air out of the system, i filled, ran and then topped off.

jetrainor....

all the intake, vac lines, fuel lines etc have all been redone.

you must be speedy gonzalez for it to be a 30 minute job. if you have a lift maybe, but jacking the car and getting on jack stands takes 5-10 min just to do that, by the time you get the jack and stands out, jack the car, etc... get out service covers and install... 5-10 minutes
remove alternator.... 5-10 minutes... drain rad and remove hose for access to alternator and res. hoses... 10 -15 minutes...

i had to remove the pass. tire for access, this takes a few min to remove replace...

i also had to disconnect BOTH sides of the swaybar to get the banjo bolt out. the bolt hit the swaybar before it unscrewed all the way... so this takes at least 10 minutes.

i don't see how anyone could possibly do the job from start to driving in 30 minutes.... no way.

all and all it was not a bad job.. for me the hardest part was re aligning and starting the bottom banjo bolt.. every time i would move the bango fitting, the whole hose would flop over and move the fitting way out of wack.... you have NO leverage grabbing this little end of the bolt..

i think loosely mounting the line in the bracket on the fender well first would help with this issue, as i did not have a big deal changing the two different sized bolts....

i think if i had to do it again, i could do it in about 1.5 hours. if i already had everything ready

oh, the other thing that added time was firing off the emails to roger.... PLEASE skip this step, as it will save a lot of embarrassment.

On my RHD i had to remove starter motor to remove hose. It would not come out without extra room this gave me.
