Default 928 or 944 performance chip

Are there performance chips for 928s or 944s that actually work?

And if there are what do they improve or enhance?

You need to search for Porken's chips for the 85s and later. I've searched the 944 forums too on this topic back when I was considering a 951 or 944S2. It seems like there was very little that Prosche left on the table in terms of 944 tuning - at least with out serious risk of engine knock or long term reliability.

But there is some gain to be had on the 32V 928s that seems pretty solid and reliable.

Another vote for Ken's chips. There are many of us that are extremely happy with his work. Only thing is its only for the early 32v cars.

So there is not much out there for the 80 928 16v?

You have correctly inferred what I meant to imply. There are no "chips" for 16V cars. There are decent gains to be had with headers, intakes, cams, exhaust, but there is no ECU retune on the 16V cars.

Keep in mind how the 16V cars map their timing. Its vaccuum control on a distributor. There is no computer controlling that stuff, at least to my knowledge - we're talking the early days of ECUs here.

Only real option if you want a retune is to go to a stand-alone system. There is pretty good documentation on the forum for going to megasquirt and a few others but you'll have to use "search" to sift through it.

performance considerations for 16V US cars seem to be:
- maintenance to run as stock
- bump timing a few degrees advanced
- Y-pipe + high flow cats if applicable or complete exhaust
- 85/86 exhaust manifolds (or dremel stockers like Porken did)
- Euro top-end swap
- supercharger (plug n play)

the first 4 items will liven it up quite a bit for little $$, but minimum do the first two.

Exhaust I definitely plan to do. Does an air intake ( k and n) do much for the 16v?

K&N is not recommended for LH systems due to potential filter oil reaching the hot wire.

50/50 for Ljet (your 16v) - some feel K&N flows more, but there doesn't seem to be any dyno data to support improvement...although for 32v'rs, there has been dyno data to support the stock filter flowing better than K&N.

Recommendation would be to stick with stock.

Sounds good Anonymous. When it comes to the exhaust. What is the best setup for the 80 928?

Probably Borla for pre-made - have read good feedback for performance and exhaust tone improvement - if you can find one for sale.

One of these days, our '80 will get dremeled manifolds, Y-pipe to 3", high-flow cat, small Magnaflow out stock tips (I like the stock tips). Will provide needed exhale for performance and slight db increase, but actually a cheap DIY job if you bend the tubing or have a good shop to work with.

With this baseline, the next big upgrade to a mild boost SC or RMT should thrive and reach our goal of 400hp. Easily achievable. With the lighter weight/feel of the '80, the addt'l power should make it a fantastic balanced performer.

Good luck!
