1984 928S value?
I am looking at the above car. Has 32,xxx original miles. Just had timing belt and water pump done. Paint and exterior is cosmetically excellent. Black exterior. Wheels are perfect. Tires plenty of tread. Interior is tan and in good, not great condition. No tears or stains but shows some wear. 1 owner. Asking price is $17,500. Reactions?

For the miles and lack of needed maintenance that does not sound out of line to me, but I am a pricing optimist too... It will be a HUGELY different car from your GT3RS and Z8! I LOVE the Z8's btw! Maybe the best looking car BMW has ever made IMHO!

I'm certainly no expert on car valuation, but that sounds fair to me as well. Realistically, what other type of car for that price can give you the experience that a mechanically and cosmetically sound 928 can?
Oh, and I agree with the Z8 beeing the best looking car that BMW has ever made. Every time I see one at a car show, I am immediately gravitated towards it!

Is paint original or re-spray?
Again pics, pics and pics.

cannot trust the mileage as most odometer broke at a very early stage, to verify mileage is to look at wear and tear items like seats, steering wheel, pedals and motor condition but nice to hear 84 is asking for that kind of money and people are looking at them.

Seems high side, would need to be perfect to command 17,500, be a 5 speed, and have no synchro grind.
Water pump and TB would need to have been done with a non-rebuilt pump by somebody that knew what they were doing.
Motor mounts would have to have been replaced. No leaks. Not a repaint.
Need also to know if its a Euro (grey market) with 310 hp instead of 240-ish USA / can tell from an engine bay pic showing distributor
17,500, is possibly double or triple or quadruple what its worth, even if a time capsule.
So far, very different price behavior than equivalent condition 911 also found sleeping in a heated garage.
Argueable, certainly. Mabye 10-12 if really, really original and maintained, but with worn interior.
Pictures needed.

Would have to be flawless inside and out. That's well sorted S4 or GT price range. And, +1 on not trusting odometers on 84s--especially if it doesn't jibe with the wear on the interior. I don't follow e-bay/CL as much as I used to, but I don't think I've ever seen an 84 command that much $$. But David (above) is probably in the best position as he just finished his NY/NJ search.

I paid nearly one third of that asking price for my 83 5 spd LSD with 158k. It had about 50k miles over last 10 years according to PO. Devek radiator, Eibach/Bilstien susp, tranny from a '86 so it has Borg Warner synchros. A few more things I can't recall right now. Interior of mine is solid, no cracks in dash or pod, everything works, leather seats are worn but no rips or cracks, one or two pleats starting to pop up. I hopped in and put 100 miles on the clock day after purchase. Hope that helps and good luck!

Forgot to mention mine is with Ray Munsch in Raleigh NC right now (porschevert) about to get new TB and WP as well as cam cover gaskets. To do list was confirmed to be very short whew!

It's high dollar, but if it has really nice paint / interior and sorted mechanically that's really what you'd expect it to cost. Hard to find perfect 16V cars these days. I bought mine 3 years ago for $12,000. It was a mechanically perfect and fully sorted car - has given me no problems in 3 years of ownership The former owner gave me a notebook documenting 2 years and $19,700 of upgrades, replacement parts, and deferred maintenance. Mine has a good paint job (but it was a repaint) and good interior (but still needs a little interior restoration).
I will easily spend more than $5K on a "windows out" repaint plus some interior leather work - so if the one you found is in cherry condition, the price is certainly fair. Ultimately I'll have about $7-$8K into mine above the purchase price to put it where I really want it.
However, it will also be a hard car to sell. It's just a low demand car at that price point. Even at $12K, The car I bought had been for sale for almost a year. So if you're buying to enjoy for a year or two and sell, I'd pass. If you are buying for long term enjoyment, go for it. Yuo won't regret it.

I paid a little over 5k for my 84. I had to do the wp/timing belt etc. I've put about 1k into it since purchased about a year and a half ago. It's going to need motor mounts, and a new dash eventually... Otherwise, it's pretty nice. If you have patience, you can sometimes find a killer deal...

Just reread the original post. If the interior isn't essentially perfect he'll never get that much for it. You descibed it a s very good but shows some wear. It's hard to tell without pictures, but my gut feeling is that it's not a $17.5K car.
Also, you haven't said how it was optioned. 5Speed generally holds a higher price point than autos, although manual cars didn't get really rare until much later. A limited slip definitely adds value - my car had that, althogh not from factory - it was a 928 INTL used trans. Also full leather can either be a plus or a minus, depending on the condition.
I'm also starting to get very skeptical of ultra-low mileage 928s given how often the odometer gears break in these cars. I've sat in a fair amount of 30,000 mile Porsches and if the owner even takes reasonable care of them its hard to tell a 30K car from a brand new one other than a little side bolster wear.
