Good deal on this '79 928?
Do you guys think this is a good deal at $6k?

My big concerns are: in CA the cat converters are required and the owner replaced the exhaust system with a nice system, but without the cat's.
Also: 1979 doesn't seem like the best year for these cars.
Oh, and of course the near complete lack of history.
But for onky $6k?

'79's are awesome, depends on what you are looking for.
Interior looks very nice, but his comments about non-finished items and paint worry me. And yeah, that cat issue. Definitely get a PPI on this one. Doesn't sound particularly cheap to me depending on what needs to be done. If he has 3 and is in So Cal, we probably know him here?

I am thinking offer 3k but only if the PPI shows it is a good car. Subtract the DMV fees from the 3k though and Seller must show it passes SMOG in CA if it stays in CA I believe.

That is certain. Seller is liable for getting it smogged, and that can't be negotiated away. In other words, if you agree to it but it still fails, the agreement doesn't count and you can still sue him. I think that even holds true if the car goes out of state; technically, the sale happened in California because that's where the car is, and the car has to pass smog if it is sold in California. However in that case neither the buyer or seller will care...

^^^I've seen Fly Navy's S4 in person and it's a much better deal, imo.

I thought you decided not to sell it? Three of four times?
Just kidding, owner's perogative!
Whats the price now?
I spoke with someone that checked it out in person, seems like a good prospect to me too (albeit based on the third hand info).
But not for me- I'm still only up to S3 ownership..

Kevin... at $2,000 price difference, that '79 looks like a shopping cart compared to Fly Navy's S4. You could have the 87yo Barfly but for 2k more you could have the hot Singer.....

Calif seller to Calif resident and seller has to do smog, BUT you might have to sue to get it and then collect on the judgement. I have no clue how in practice it works out, but I've noticed many of the charity auctions won't sell to Calif resident unless they know the car passes smog.
This car is a FAIL, and $6k is a premium price a MUCH nicer car would go for. I don't care for the presentation that its much nicer than what I think anybody with 2 other 928's should realize it isn't.
For reference VIN: 928921255
I'm curious how the page offering the car for sale was found, its buried in a blog web page.

The '87 looks great, no doubt.
Auto and sun roof.
Has more hp but is an interference engine.
The '79 has a 5spd and no sun roof.
Non interference engine, lose the timing belt it's not a big problem.

Thanks for the feedback all. Seems I was right to be apprehensive ;-)
"buried in some blog site" I just reposted what I had: pictures and info on the car on my own "scratch" site. I found it elsewhere and put together what I had from emails and such.
I like Fly Navy's car A LOT but I really want a 5 speed. I can't see buying this car in an auto. Just my personal preference.
So I'm still in the market...
