Default Another DFW new shark owner

I too am a new Dallas area new owner. I purchased my 86.5 (Auto) on E-bay from a guy in Naples, Fl. He had done a "complete restoration" 4 years and 4000 miles ago and claimed to have fixed everything except the cassette box hinges(broken) and the passenger mirror remote adjuster. This was the one featured in Excellence magazine in Sept 2008. Since my wife and I drove it the 1300 miles back to Texas last weekend we have noticed a number of items that need to be sorted out.

The first item was the driver seat slides forward about 1cm when you brake moderately hard.

The second item is the transmission seems to shift a little clunky. Is that normal? It also seems to be getting better as I drive more city miles.

The third item is the cruise control. When going up hills it slows noticeably. If I tap the gas it goes back to the previous setting. It also seemed to be hard to engage when first driving in the morning. This seemed to improve as the day wore on.

The fourth item was the AC. We used it on and off on the long drive back from Florida. A few times I noticed when I changed the temp setter to a higher setting there would be a small almost unnoticeable puff of smoke and an odd odor come through the center vents. At times the AC seemed to cut out for a few moments. Also the rear control fan makes a whining sound.

The fifth item is the paint, which for the most part is fantastic has several chips. One by the passenger door and two on the gas cap cover. Any recommendations for repair of those?

The sixth item is the steering wheel. I have the original also redone by by Rob Budd but it came with the one in the picture. Is it hard to change them?

The last item is the neutral safety switch is out. The mechanic who changed the oil and brake fluid found this one prior to leaving with the car. He was going to fix it but he got the wrong part in. We decided to deal with it back in Texas.

Another note: we don't have an owners manual as the prior owner had removed it. We didn't notice it until we were 150 miles down the road. He is supposed the ship it to me along with the old spoiler a clock which also is not working and he failed to tell me.

I would love to hear some comments from experienced owners. I am loving the car and still getting to know her. I can't wait to bring her to the DFW owners meeting.

Yes, great interior, pls post more pics, don't think many OBs had dash same color as the seats.

You are arguably in the best 928 area of the United States, possibly the world. Rog, Sean and the rest of the gang are a fantastic support group!

Oh, and do a search, somebody has posted all the owner's manuals on their website. There are many interesting nuances in there, I still learn new things when I look in mine.

Enjoy!

Tom: Unless you are referring to leather dash matching seats, I don't think it is unusual. This is an '85 owned now by Rick (Wyatt's Ride).

Give me a ring and swing it by this weekend. Rog plans on coming over to goof off for a bit and that would be a perfect time to bring it over for a quick glance. I'm sure we can answer most of your questions at that time also.

Great looking car.

Welcome to DFW- nice looking 928. If you want to rid yourself of that steering wheel, I would be interested. I have a similar one in my 911. Hope to met you on Feb 4th

Another 928 in FlowerMound ... must be something in the water!

DFW area has GOT to be one of the best places to be an owner. Lots of fellow 928 freaks and a great parts supplier to boot. Would love to see more pics of your interior. That looks stunning.

Nice looking car. That is a pretty long list for a car that is "restored" I think... I love the color though. I too have one in that shade (or close to it, mine is Ruby Red). The boys up north will take good care of you. BTW, that is a VERY POPULAR steering wheel and if you don't like it you shouldn't have any problems selling it for good money!

San Diego, all 928's will end up in Texas eventually it seems! LOL! Rog and I (and a few others, hello Tony!) are doing our best to get them all here as soon as possible! LOL!

beautiful car. I remember that auction- hope it lives up to its billing. I'm sure the deficiencies are annoying, but really don't seem that bad ...so far.

Alllready then, on to some of the more substantive points..

Steering wheel- is not difficult. No air bag one wire for the horn and mind the turn signal cancellation device. And the orientation so it is correctly oriented for straight ahead.

Transmission...check fluid level...but likely a vacuum lieak or maybe the modulator. But I'd bet a vacuum leak.

Seat track..sorry no help there but I would bet it is something loose from R&R for 'restoration/clean up.

A/C.. I got nuthin' have my own issues to tackle there and no skills.

SeanR and Roger can get you squared away very quickly.

Welcome

Thanks for all the nice compliments. I guess my expectation was it was near perfect. Well it turns out the car had been sitting for a while and not driven much. I am finding that the more I drive it the better it seems to drive. I like the feel of the steering wheel but I prefer the look of the stock one pictured in the E-bay ad. I guess I will have to figure out which I like better by switching them out.

VERY NICE!!! Great color combo too! IMO the 86.5 is the BEST 928... O.K. so I'm partial to fast ones So your well ahead of the game in that regard and considering it drove 1300 miles without incident I'd say you did very well No telling how much it cost the PO to do that interior, but chances are it was close to 1/2 of the price of the car. It doesnt sound like you have too many MAJOR issues other than the A/C and theres no telling what's causing the issue - with any luck it might be minor.

The paint looks nice as well. If you only have a minor chip or two and know what your paint code is then go to DrColorChip, order the smallest touch up paint package they offer (it goes a long way) and you can touch those up very nicely for less than $60 in a few minutes. Its not concours or anything, but it does cover the chips very well.

These other issues will probably be identified, if not sorted out, by the time those TX guys get done looking at your car!

Again, Welcome to the tank and congratulations on a very nice purchase!
