If you trade for that pig you will turn your 928 dream into a nightmare. The work done on the 944 was not done by you and you have no clue how much you can and will spend on a old neglected 928.
Take a deep breath / a cold shower and SAVE a few thousand dollars while you drive your 944 Porsche for a while longer. Also start working on the 944 yourself and learn how to fix things. Do you change your own oil ??

Step 1: Walk away from this 928
Step 2: Get in your 944 and drive it for a couple more years
Step 3: When something on your 944 breaks, fix it yourself
Repeat 20 times
Step 4: Consider getting a 928 and using your old 944 that you know how to fix as your backup car.

It is very difficult for me to resist getting the 928 right now, however I understand what everyone is saying. I am at the point where I am willing to hang onto my 944 for a few years but I have to do some work on it such as:
Exhaust
Timing belt
A few cosmetics

I want the 928 for power and I just love the car. I think I can wait a few years for that...maybe

I thought you wrote that the TB had been recently changed? Regardless of how long your list is, I'll bet the needs to be done list on that 928 is even longer.

Is it just because the car I'm looking at looks rough or because old 928s in general need high maintenance.

Buying a 928 is not like buying a 944. With a 944, you are basically looking at the same type of upkeep and while there are large differences in performance top to bottom, generally the car is either in good health or not.

With a 928, this is a MUCH more complicated question and equation. ANY year model in excellent health is worth your money. BUT the dogs of almost any year, except the higher-hp ones, are usually ones to run away from. As you get into GT; GTS; 32V; later Euros you can become more willing to fix a badly-worn 928 because in the end you will have a great car. But if you put the same money into this car, what will you have?

If they haven not been properly maintained the parts are expensive to get the car back to good running order. If you have to pay someone to fix it then it is even more $$$.
