The 944 guys on Rennlist are as helpful as the 928'ers. I know, I do my own work on the 928 as well as the work on my son's 944 (with him in tow as he learns), and have used them for assistance.

@dr bob. Thanks for the input. I have to drive the car soon and figure out if it's something I'm going to dive into.
The guy currently uses it as a DD I believe. It is on the Atlanta ga Craigslist if anybody wants to check it out.

Car looks like more of a project than a DD. If the owner couldn't pay $10 for the washer fluid cap, I'd guess there's a LOT of other deferred maintenance. Everything under that hood looks original--no shiney stuff (other than radiator hose clamp) to make me think anything's been done.
Good on you for wanting a 928 and your willingness to fix it up, but if you don't have a spare car to drive while you're waiting on parts, I just don't see that one as a DD. At least not without significant up-front effort/money. But, ya never know 'til you put eyes-on.

Per Doc Bob "Bottom line: if you go for the 928, hang on to the 944 at least for a while." So true
I bought a 81 for a few k in 2010. PO is the owner of an independent Porsche shop here in SD and still it required some small maintenance. The car had complete fluid change, all rubber hoses with a recent TB and WP and re-covered interior and respray within the last few years. I needed to sort out vacuum leaks, etc. and now runs and idles very good. Just put on new tires after 1 year and 4000 miles of driving and needs radiator fix or replacement now. 600 for tires and a possible 400 for a used radiator after 1 year. You never know when or how much money you will need so start saving. I have only put in a few hundred in misc. parts last year but many hours (at least 8 weekends) getting to know her and sorting things out.
Just wanted to explain like others have that these cars are old and need care and will always need care. I do not depend on my 928 as a daily driver. I have 2 motorcycles and a truck to make sure I get to work. Porsche Friday is fun and a drive in the local mountains or beach is grand. I will not drive her too hard because I believe something will break sooner.
Keep the 944 and buy a 928 too.

I would keep them both if I could but I don't have the funds. I'm going to try get the 928 and then get a winter beater if I can. Everyone has basically said that I should not rely on it as my main mode of transportation

Please don't get the wrong idea--in my 12 years of owning 928s, neither have ever left me stranded. The problem is, once you start a repair, there's always old plastic clips and stuff breaking off--or you discover something else is broke too--and you just can't run to NAPA and get what you need. I would think it's kind of similar with your 944?

I don't know, the guys, well a couple of them over at the Covette Forum have told me again and again how Superior the same year model Corvette is against any 928, in every respect.
Worf came over on one thread and set them straight, is was classic.

In good shape. Needs little cosmetic work, head rebuilt year ago. 115xxx miles. Newish brakes, tires, new speakers (infinities).
When head was rebuilt they replaced a ton things including the timing belt and pumps. Why do you ask??

It was a round about way to see if you do any work on the 944 and how long you have owned it.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but limited funds + a 928 as your only vehicle = a recipe for disaster.
The same can be true for a 944, but it sounds like you've already put significant work into it. Why not stick with the 944 a little longer until you've at least purchased the beater winter / backup car. There are plenty of 928s out there, and there doesn't appear to be anything special about the one you are looking at. I wouldn't get sucked into it just because a trade offer makes the initial transition easier.

No fun, but you need to wait and pile up some funds, plus that isn't a car I would be anxious to drop all my spare money for the next few years into. Better to start with a much nicer car.

^^^^ +928 what danglerb shared above.
Just looking at the interior pics, my instant thought is to run away. If the car is that neglected, and it doesn't look like it's close to safe driver status as it shows, you are going to need all of my $5k budget before you would consider driving it. Then another few $k before you'd risk being seen driving it.
Lots of 'cheap' cars change hands when an owner figures out that the impending costs exceed their budgets and their picture of the future value. I have no idea your financial situation, but can speculate that it is a bit too fragile for this 928 right now. You'll be a lot happier saving your money, and finding a car that's in better initial condition. One you can drive and work on for the first few years and have at least a reasonable expectaion that you can get to work, church and the pool hall on those days you'd like to.

I definitely understand what everyone is saying and I'm taking it to heart. Really want a 928 right now but I know I don't have to extra money to bring a sub-par one back to at least par. I'm still going to drive, but I won't make a decision til I have it looked at or I can always just walk away. Your advice and opinions are greatly appreciated.
