Wow, now I'm really confused. Years ago, I was told that because of the resister, the amount of energy applied would have to Increase in order to get past the resistor, so the end result at the plug electrode was actually higher with a 'resistor' plug. I kind of gave up after that; and just ran whichever plug worked best. I'll just go with what PorKen recommends.

Been away from this for awhile. Even after changing out the plugs still no start! Later today I plan on getting back into it.

My best guess, I think I may have damaged the LH while removing the original chips. That was, in the beginning, the only thing I did to a running engine. This chip was particularly hard to remove and i may have "bent" the PC board, maybe loosening a resistor solder point or breaking a trace?

I looked at the board until strong light and magnifier, but may have missed something.

I've got new battery, and still when key is first turned to on, the tach pegs all the way, then during cranking, tach is erractic all over the place. The CPS is new and i checked and cleaned it's plug. I had just replaced all the "53" relays. And almost all the fuses with new.

I would like to check the condition of the cpu's just to either rule them out or in as the source of the problem!

Yup, that could be it.

Got anyone near you that can swap out theirs with yours to see if that's it?

LoL, kinda like borrowing someone's wife or girlfriend? I would be happy just to get it tested if possible? not sure where to go on that.

Btw, i just pulled one of the plugs i had just put in. It was soaked and I even noticed raw gas smell from exhaust. Think this is not the cause, but the result of bad LH.

What ECU's are compatible?

LH/EZ from US '85-86.5 is the only option. The S3 is a unique animal.

John, Unfortunately, I dont have a spare LH or you'd already have it in your car! If nothing else I can bring my car down to Cinci and we can swap the LH computer to see if yours is cooked. Let me know...

Joel,
I would be tempted to take you up on that! I have mine out again, and i'm going to look it over again, just to make sure I didn't miss any cracks or anything.

I am checking around for any way to test out of the car? I would like to eliminate as cause of problem!!!

I wonder if it would be better to try mine in your car?

Trying to figure out which would tell the most!

Trying your computer(s) in my car would probably be the safest route... I think I'll be in Cinci next week. Its my B-Day this weekend so I wont be going anywhere... at least not without SEVERELY pissin' off the better half If nothing else pans out for you, and the weather is half decent, I'll bring my car down and we can swap out some computers and do some trouble shooting.

In the meantime, I'd post a new thread detailing your car's MY, etc, all the current symptoms, what you've done to date for trouble-shooting, whats NOT wrong, etc... and ask for some guidance & recommendations from "The List"... Might be something as simple as one or both coil grounds being disconnected from the engine or not secure under the coil mounting brackets... ASK ME HOW I KNOW...

Ken, Mike Frye, EVERYBODY...

If your listening. What do you think could be the cause of John's flooding / non-start issues. His car was running well prior to the 3.5 chip and NGK plugs install. He's reversed everything back to stock and its still flooding, wont start, etc... Thinking it could be an issue with the LH or EZK board?? May have damaged one during chip installation - which would SUCK

Would it be safer to swap out HIS car's LH and/or EZK computer(s) into MY car for troubleshooting purposes? We dont have a spare set of computers to test with so I'm volunteering my car to test his computers... Is this a good idea or not ? Were down to guessing at this point...

Thanks,

Joel

I have a spare set of computers with stock chips installed. For the price of shipping I could send them to the OP for testing purposes. You break it you bought it at replacement costs .

If you think this is fair, PM with mailing info.

PS- I'm with Joel on the suggestion to start a new thread. This may look like a discussion of spark plugs to most people and that's not going to drag in the 'big guns' on here.

I'd suggest a title like:
S3 won't start after chip upgrade- or something like that. It will get the attention of the S3 crowd and then later when we fix it, it will turn up in searches.

Mike that is truly appreciated..

I'm with you on the "if i break, i buy"!!!

Right now I have the stock FPR back in and both computers out. Looking them over with a magnifying glass, but don't see any obvious issues. I'm cranking occasionally with the #42 fuse pulled to clear fuel.

I will PM you my address. advise on shipping costs.
Paypal on shipping costs ok?

thanks again.

Just noticed that Porken's website is now calling out the NGK BP7ES as the preferred plug for the s300 chips. This thread was recommending the NGK BP8ES. Does anyone know why there was a change? Will the BP8ES still work with the S300?
