Will 245/50 R16sWork?
I have a 1987 S4 with 16s. The normal size for the rear is 245/45 R16, but the only tires I can find are $379 ea and are very soft racing tires. I can't afford that right now so I was looking at 245/50 R16 instead at $120 ea.
Anyone know if the 50s will fit or are they too big?
Thanks for the help!

Will fit. The 45 aspect are the correct factory overall diameter (24.68"). The 50 aspect ratio, however, being a larger overall diameter (25.65") than the 45, will give you a slightly higher speed by about 4 percent for the same revs. If your speedo was under-reading true speed it will be closer to correct with the taller tyre. It's worth checking after you fit them to know exactly what your speedo is reading relative to correct speed. If the car was reading and actually travelling at 100mph before, it will be travelling at about 104mph with taller tyre and yet still showing 100.

And with the larger rolling diameter slightly reduces the torque advantage and can yield a less responsive launch...not that it would be to the extent that you would notice.
I drove a loaner car with those rears, the sidewall is pretty tall (looking) for the application by today's standards but there werre no contact issues.

They just look a bit odd due to the height of the sidewall, kinda gives it a muscle car rake look with bigger taller rear tires. Theoretically will not handle or accelerate as well but not by much and your speedometer will be off.
