Rear End Bearing Whine..

Rear End Bearing Whine..
I have a rear end whine.
Its only noticable coasting a little, but at 'slack' throttle mostly.
Under load, not there.
Just wondered...what're the odds that this is the roller bearings (999 059 027 00) for the output flange -vs- the pinion bearing?
I'll get to it in June most likely..but wanted to start a conversation on it.
Thanks!

What are the chances that all the bearings are worn?
Why would you even think about just changing one if it was bad and not change them all?

Not pinion.
But...in June, I could do the whole damned unit, NP.

hi,
that sounds familiar. Nope, it is not the half-axle bearing, and I checked backlash of the R&P too. They are fine. I have the humming at about 50 km/h and it only exists when under very moderate load. It seems like the meshing of the teeth started to make a sound due to wear. The humming sound is a about 250Hz which is close to the mesching freq while driving 50km.h.
I'm planning to swap the R&P and have found a set that is supposed to be ok. It is a big job that will have to wait until weather is warmer again. Schocki (also on this list) did thios for his GTS and the problem disappeared.

I changed rear hub bearings and CVs on my first 928 to stop rear growling noise and it didn't go away. I changed my rear tyres [tires] and all was quiet.
Borrow or swap the rear wheels before blowing a lot of cash.

Yessir. He did in fact do that.
I have on qualms about changing it again, however.
This is a new noise..because everything behind the flywheel is "new to me". The requisite simple stuff to do to the TC bearings, seals, pump Oring/etc have been done. Was fun watching and learning in that phase of the job.

When we changed a rear axle on Sharky it made an odd noise for a couple days......then it went away....kinda like a bearing when turning certain directions....Maybe it was just the new CV's settling in?

Whine on trailing throttle deserves a look at play (lash) in the gear set. Fairly simple with gearbox still in the car I suspect, but needs the exhaust dropped out of the way. Many used gearsets are "checked" with oil on the mating faces. Should be done without, else you get a false reading. Requires a dial indicator and bracket to check accurately. Adjustment is a little more involved, but you will at least know what you are dealing with. FWIW, front pinion bearings seldom fail unless they are run dry, and the front one is the one that will be noisy on trailing throttle IIRC.

Brian:
I had new boots/grease but the CV hardware is still the same.
