I got mine from Stable Energies a few years ago. Once I got the right model for the seat in the 86.5, it went in really easy, and does not rattle at all (like the one that came with my 964).

I wonder is any of these mini extniguishers have enough punch to make a difference when a fuel fire is blazing under the hood.

Got the same as Steve (SE bracket, Haltron FE) and have been very happy. No noise or rattles. I can remove the FE in a few seconds which is peace of mind since my kids often are in the car. It's got good clearance under the legs. I do recall I had to remove the plastic seat motor cover and slightly bend the fore/aft seat adjustment (8 way sport seats).

I'd say anything is better than nothing, and having one accessible often mean it can't be seriously large. I couldn't imagine a 5 pounder between my wife's legs. I might find that seriously off-putting.

But seriously, PCA club racing rules state 2-1/2 pounds or better....

12. A 2-1/2 lb. or larger fire extinguisher capable of extinguishing B/C type fires, securely metal-to-metal mounted in the cockpit in a safe location convenient to the driver while seated and restrained is required. An on-board fire suppression system is strongly recommended.

I think the single handed Brey-Krause grab and go are best (and also most expensive) . I have not seen a stock mount that works well without modification - but its not so hard to make a custom one that moves with the seat. Here the release lever is underneath - just reach under, grab - rotate up and its free... so easy - can't operate with a foot accidentally. BTW its 2.5 Lbs real "old school" recycled halon, environmentally unfriendly but works ~2x better better than the current Halotron.

The practical value of this is capacity - 2.5 Lbs of Halon = ~5Lbs of Halotron

The mount is truly a piece of functional art!

I have a second mount plate behind the passenger side front seat - also mounted under the seat bottom - so I can swap it to that location (slightly harder to reach but possible from drivers seat) - I do this swap only when I have a passenger for a long distrance ride (or my wife in the car - since she just dislikes the extinguister) - just more comfortable for them.

I've installed both the B-K mount and the Rennline mount. The Rennline mount mounts to the bottom of the seat and therefore moves with the seat. The B-K mounts to the rail and doesn't allow the seat to move very far forward. I like the Rennline mount and will be tossing my B-Ks.

I don't know, if anything is better than nothing. If the capacity is too small to knock the fames down, all you do is buy yourself a few more seconds. During racing this is ok as they have proper fire equipped safety vehicles on standby. On the side of the road it's a whole different story. This is why I asked how effective these small extinguishers are.

I agree that halon is much better.. I think it is good to have some experience with fire extinguishers. I was able to practice with one once and its not as intuitive as you might think think.... if you have never used one, then you might just waste it trying to figure out how to use it.

The B-K seat rail mounts are indeed about the stupidest thing ever - who wants an extingusher mount that doesn't move with the seat...?

Bangs head !! (stupid stupid idea)

However their quick release system is just great.

(so one wonders... how are the 2 made by the same company... )

The stable energies seat mount is good but seems it needs mods to fit to a 928 seat - and then you still need to adapt to the quick release mount.

Bottom line - I think you have to be willing to do some FAB work to get a good solution here, not many plug & play options.

As they say at fire suppression training: PASS
P = Pull the pin
A = Aim at the base of the fire
S = Squeeze the trigger
S = Sweep side-to-side

There is nothing wrong with the BK mount. Fits fine, just doesn't move with the seat. It only cuts off forward seat movement at the furthest most forward position.

Halon is probubly the best way to go.

Good luck Randy!

Michael

Need to get one of these for my VW. More stuff to buy, it's Christmas right?

No it is not, you get half way through the engine bay and run out. That is why I carry two now, a 5 #er with a hose attachment to arrest the fire before fully openning the hood all the way and the 2.5 #er for mop-up work.

I used the RennLine mount, it moves with the seat. They sell a mount for power and manual seats.

NO affilation, just a satisified customer.

Sorry Mike - not moving with the seat is just dumb. So you can't even move the seat all the way forward (I did wonder). If you move it all the way back the extingisher looks like a boat floating right away from the dock... and functionally for the passenger it is even more in their way.

I do imagine lawyers were involved in this design - with the usual horrible results.

So its probably very safe..

But, when your seat rails are rated for seat attached seatbelts its hardly a concern...

Hi

I am a little amazed that you still use Halon in the US as it was banned in the UK years ago....

We used to use it for the onboard fire suppressant systems in Top Fuel Dragsters and it was brilliant stuff as even after use you got no residue to damge the engine or blower, but that was in the eighties and its been banned for at least ten years in the UK..... very bad for the atmosphere apparently..a greenhouse gas...

Is it not also banned in the US ?

All the best Brett
