Just reading this thread, and knowing who Bill Ball is, I am impressed by the outpouring of sympathy and offers of assistance. Karma is either a bitch or a wonderful thing. Bill has accumulated a lot of the wonderful kind and I am proud to be a member of this forum, when I see how you all reach out to him

Yeah, everyone feels your pain Bill. Turn enough wrenches you're gonna come across ****e like this. Nothing worse than bolting in a new part only to learn it's not right either. Argh. I've been watching with interest because my 84 is in the air for the same thing... tired old tranny and weeping tc. Not sure whether to pull it and rebuild it, stuff in a used, or stuff in a rebuilt. All a question of dollars, one way or another I'm in for a tranny r&r.

You guys are too nice and are giving me lots of options. I'll figure it out Monday. In the meantime I'm trying to figure out why our Durango failed smog and then developed a miss in one cylinder while I was trying to figure that out. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel injectors and the miss is still there. Compression is lower in the dead cylinder but it has excellent leakdown. I'm thinking I may have bent a pushrod when I got a little over zealous during an attempt at a Italian tune-up. Valve cover comes off tomorrow. Fortunately, pushrods are only $3 to $5. Been a bad month for cars around our house.

Good one, Randy. Yeah, I wish. I sold it because it didn't seem to be giving me the same thrill only to discover later that it had a huge crack in the manifold so was generating no boost.

Yeah, I wanted so much for this tranny to be fixed that I installed every part down to the wheels and torqued every bolt down carefully rather than just plug it in and test it first.

When you got the transmission back, was the converter and front cover housing already installed?

The reason I ask, is that it is possible to bolt the front converter housing cover on, without the converter being seated fully to the front pump, the last "clunk" is sometimes hard to line up and get to seat fully. This could cause some bad noises, and quickly ruin the front pump/bushing.

Hey Mike: It was all installed and buttoned down and the TC seemed to turn easily so I thought perhaps it was dimensionally OK. All I did was check the torque on the flexplate bolts and then proceed to put the tranny back in the car.
